CZ-5 Question

Hi folks, I am getting a new to me Fisher CZ-5 this comming Friday. I traded a Tesoro Tejon for it, the guy I am getting it from said that it was sent in to East Teaxas Detectors and a person named Keith Wills recalibrated it (whatever that means). I found a few tips on the CZ-5 and read through all the posts on this forum that I could find on it. I like to hunt school grounds, parks, ball fields & tot lots, my question is - can I expect to find jewelry with it like I did with my Tesoro's, especially in the tot lots. I just love finding jewelry even if it isn't worth anything. Thanks all. Steve.

Hi Steve!

Traded the Tejon? ... wow! But a CZ is a good trade. I've got a CZ6a and Tejon (and others). Like each for different reasons. The CZ6a is the pretty much the same animal as the CZ5, but no speaker, water resistant, but not water proof.

Keith is one of a couple of names I've run across (outside of the factory) who knows the CZ's very well and will make sure they are tuned and performing right.

CZ will find jewelry.

I feel I have done better on jewelry in school yards and tot lots with the Tesoros than the CZ for reasons that have nothing to do with the detector. With the CZ, I sometimes let targets go and don't dig all the foil or square tab indications; particularly when I'm getting tired. With the Tesoro's I run discrimination below foil and dig it all because I have that mental doubt about what I discriminate out at different settings. I may also miss smaller pieces that may register as low tone on the CZ because I generally don't dig repeatable low tones with the CZ. May be a big mistake on my part, but it's how I've hunted with it. I've found some very nice rings with the CZ.

I'm sure you will do well with the CZ. It is a very good detector.

Thanks for the reply tvr. Steve.

Hi Steve

The CZ5 is a great machine, but I think it is overkill to use one on a totlot, you would be getting signals way below the layer of the fill of the totlot.Did you get the 5 inch coil with it? This coil is the best acc. for the CZ. Good luck with your new detector..........Hombre

Hi buddy hope all is well with you. No small coil, would like one though, but $$$ is so tight. I have read where the 5" coil makes the CZ-5's tid inaccurate and is not good to pinpoint with. The poor pinpointing with a small coil statement doesn't make sense to me. Thanks for chiming in Hombre. Steve.

Well Steve

It's like this...........if I believed everything I read or heard about sumthin, I would'nt have tried anything at all!!! The 5 inch coil is a good'n, mine stays on fulltime, as far as TID inaccuracy, as the target gets deeper, the TID drops in scale. Almost every detector will do that. But you have to decide that for yourself, just hold on to the CZ for a while and learn it. I have not had mine too long, but I figured it out pretty quickly...............PS: The small coil pinpoints very good, and if you detune it over the target, you can bet it is in the center of the coil. The small coil overloads some on coins on the surface, and on larger than coin type targets. It is an easy fix, just slowly lift the coil while still swinging it over the target until you get a good signal, and the TID will be accurate also.....Hombre

If you after jewelry dig all your foil signals as that is the hot spot for thin gold rings with nice stones...Small coil would be ideal but thats a personal preference as far as overkill for Tot lots just run sens. 3 or 4 and you still will get good depth with the 8 inch stock coil...in older areas its a killer on deep silver with sens. from 5 to 8 and still keeping a stable unit..Read the bobbing method of ground balance and practice in your yard and you will excell with this unit...Do remember gold rings can come in anywhere from foil to Zinc so its your call what you dig but unlike the Tesoro with a meter you will have an idea what you are going for..Google Mikes CZ page as it has a wealth of info for CZ users...Having used Tesoro's and CZ's Tesoro probably has the edge with especially small items for gold jewelry but heck dug my best gold ring ever with a CZ5 in the foil region..Early 1900's 12 diamond 14 kt gold ring...Good luck with your new unit....

Hombre's got it right. A quarter near the surface rings the large target bell with the 5 inch coil. Lift it a little to ID it. Mine ID's pretty well until coin size things get around 5 inches down then it seems to go about a target indicator lower or may swing between two ID's.

Pinpoint is accurate.

Iron can beep high tone. Slow the sweep way down and see if it goes low tone, or if you are discriminating it out goes away with the slow sweep. With the CZ, I tend to walk around the target while swinging slow to see what it says from many sweep approaches.
Enjoy the CZ.

Dan's got it right, reading his posts got me up to speed on the CZ5. Ground balancing this machine is a piece of cake, although having experience from using 10 turn GB pots on the older Tesoro's helps the learning curve somewhat. And using 0 disc, and letting the low buzz of iron thru helps identify iron nails, also using the pinpoint to see if the target is small and round will reduce diggin unwanted ferous trash. Thanks Dan-Pa................Hombre

All you people have been more than helpful, I really appreciate it. I am hoping to get it Friday & try it out this Saturday & will let you know how I do with it. Thanks everyone. Steve.
