CZ-5 and nails question

could someone tell me exactly how to distinguish the difference between deep nails and deep coins I sorta notice a echo when they are coins but what do I know.

Here are a couple of tips...make sure the target repeats from two right angle swings, swinging side to side., if the target seems to move while pinpointing or just sounds bigger than a coin chances are its a rusty nail that has rusted and leached into the ground and your picking up the halo which usually lands in coins all. Dig it and lay it on ground and it will be completely notched out so perhaps if you have a hole dug might want to go over it in all metal.Last but not least after a lot of practice it will just sound different than a coin that falls in coins all. Reading Mikes CZ page would help and in all honestly no exact way of telling, but you can cut down the odds...

I like your discription about that echo sound.
So what you know just may be the ticket to knowing the differences in targets responses.
Thanks for the tip , I will be also looking to see if I can hear a different sound and investigate.
Something more to add in the fun and challenge of the cz. Possible to couple some of the things Dan Pa mentions and have the combo of into to enhance your abilities with your cz.

I have a 3D, which is basically a CZ-5. Dan's info is good. In addition, when you pinpoint, try to get a "target profile" from the object. Coins will have a tight pinpoint. Nails will have a larger pinpoint profile and also, the center of the target will be in a different place than where you heard the coin ping. Throw a few coins on the ground and practice "target profiling". I'm getting somewhat proficient with this technique and my 8" coil. I'm still learning to do it with my 10.5. Also, the coin ping usually comes from the head or the tip of the nail. That's why when you pinpoint it, the center of the target will move. When you wave your coil over the center of the pinpointed target, you will usually hear the iron burp. Run in disc-0 for a while and learn how much iron is around. I generally run in disc-0. It helps you to understand the falsing of the iron.
In addition to Mike's CZ page, there are a lot of info on metal detecting techniques at thegoldenolde.com

Hard to explain but a coin just sounds rounder and smaller than a nail..After much use you will be even able to tell if your after a quarter or half as it will just sound bigger..last but not least even a silver coin just sound mellower than say a wheatie that lands in coins all..Don't come overnight and would advise you to just use a CZ and not switch off as indeed has a language of its own...
