CZ-5 A-Little Help Please

Took my new to me CZ-5 out to a small ball field that I have been to many times, I am quite happy with the CZ-5, got a handful of clad. It is alittle heavier than what I am used to but balanced well & didn't mind the xtra weight. I got a few empty holes and a number of one way high tone beeps. I am thinking that the empty holes (got beep dug hole and couldn't find anything) was probably deep iron??? What could the one way high tone beeps be, thats got me puzzled. Thanks! Steve.

hi steve, glad to hear you like the cz5. i'm learning to use my cz70 and i also had a few empty holes and high tone hits that only read one direction. i haven't dug one of the one way hits yet but i suspect it is deep iron. i had to turn my sensitivity down to 4 and that seemed to help some. these are very deep machines and i think i could go back over most of the sites i have hunted hard and pull out some deep old coins that my other machines wouldn't get. my machine does kinda feel heavy but after using a tesoro anything is gonna feel heavy. good luck with your cz5 .............roger

I am not sure but think that some of the on way beep targets is a nail. I do like the CZ even though it is different than what I am used to. After using the CZ a few times so far I don't consider it heavy, I would call it solid. I would like to get a 5" coil for it someday. Steve.

Steve, when you were getting the one way high tone hits, were you hunting in discriminate mode on 1 or higher, or were you set at 0 ? What sensitivity setting are you on ? Don't go over 3 for the first several hunts. Not sure what sensitivity setting your CZ5 will start to false, but the higher sensitivity you run, the slower you have to sweep when in discriminate mode. I can't run my CZ6a above 4 without slowing down or it starts to false.

You should hear at some point when sweeping at multiple angles when in discriminate mode 0, the low tone of iron. One of the keys for the CZ is REPEATABLE hits both forward and back, and from different angles. A trick you can use is when you get targets like this, really slow your sweep down and up the sensitivity. This may bring out either a high tone on both forward and back sweeps and from multiple angles, which I would then dig, or it could bring out the low or mid tone as well. I dig all mid tone/ high tone signals, but if I get any low tone on the sweep, I size the target and get more information about it using the pin point button and VCO.

Iron will pin point a lot of times in different spots when you use the pin point button and detune/size the target. Coins and other non-iron targets will pin point almost at the same spot where iron targets, especially nails, seem to move around and pin point at different spots when you detune and size a few times. Also, iron sizes very wide when pin pointing and almost has this really loud, piercing/blaring sound while coins pin point small and have a little less of a harsh sound. This may be due to the iron being shallower a lot of times, hence due to the VCO, it's louder. Not sure, but to me coins just sound a tad different.

Let me tell you, when I first got my 6a, I dug more deep iron and nails then any other detector. But once I learned the nuances and stopped chasing a lot of the one way hits, and figured out to use discriminate setting of 0 versus 1 or higher so I can hear the low tone of iron, my digging of iron targets and rusty nails decreased substantially. I also learned that if I raised my coil about 6 inches above the hole, pin point and the depth reading is still pegged and the sound is still blaring, its not a coin ! Not sure how many deep mason jars filled with silver dollars I left behind, but I hope it wasn't many !!!

Then again, sometimes part of the fun is wanting to know exactly what that target is, and the only way to do that is dig it !

John

Those one way signals are rusty iron perhaps one of those darn blasted deep nails.. A word of caution tilted coin or coin next to iron could also be a one way signal and remember if you hit a real deep silver dime you may have to work on it to repeat from two angles. Yep CZ's are deep but like iron but once you get the hang of it you will dig few
deep rusty nails...Every unit has its give and take aways...

I dug a couple of the one way hits and saw a nail running parallel with the ground in the hole I dug . Must be lots more nails in the ground than I ever imagined because I had many one way hits. I have always been a slow swinger, I did notice that beeps would "change" if swung over at different speeds. Also had many hits that didn't repeat in different directions, not one way hits, but you know what I mean. I ran my CZ most of the time at 0 discriminate, sure makes things noisey. I actually liked running it at 1 disc. I went out with it for awhile last night and pretty much ignored everything that wasn't a good solid repeatable high tone & did quite well if I say so myself. I know everyone says this but in this case I believe it is more true than ever when I say the more I use it the more I will learn and the better I will do. Not to place judgement but after all those years using Tesoro's where I would just disc. out a small nail and dig the rest, I will have to break a few habits using the CZ. I can honestly say that I like the CZ, very good machine for such older technology. Thanks for the replys folks! Steve.

P.S. Again not to judge, but I found the Tesoro's better at detuning a target, unless I haven't learned the proper CZ detune technique.

This is high on my wish list. Sounds like a great Father's Day present for my wife to get me. Only thing is, she says I am not her Father. Steve.

Went out today for a very short hunt & found my first ring with the CZ5, boy was I impressed. I almost didn't dig it because it seemed alot larger (in the ground) than it actually was, it hit like a ton of bricks. I am learning this fine detector slow but sure, and most importantly I am enjoying using it very much. I hope to have a 5" coil for it shortly, one of our all time forum good guys has one & I am hoping to work out some kind of deal with him. While I am bragging up this machine I want to add that this baby is good at finding nickels, if it says nickels it is usually a nickel. Not digging very much trash either. Steve.

Just works better on regular pinpoint..CZ's have VCO(voltage controlled oscillator) and should put you dead on unless its a nail as it wil pinpoint to side of hole...Some units like the XLT give us the choice of either....again all units have plus and minus features...

sometimes with the cz-5 and some other machines you lose the target when break the halo. i always dig out some more dirt when i lose the signal. usually its a penny which whave a halo.

Congrats on your new CZ-5. It has been my main detector for a few years and I have mucho many hours on it.
CZ-5's are very sensitive machines and they love rusty nails. But believe me after getting some time on the machine you will learn what is a nail and what is a good signal. I maybe be wrong but I don't think I have ever dug anything good that was a one way signal. You can MAKE a nail hit both ways but it won't usually do it everytime. If it doesn't hit both ways everytime 99% of the time it's a nail or deep iron. A nail will pinpoint off to the side and not in the middle of the coil where a good target does. I'm a 60 yr old man , so I have learned to bypass alot of hits that 99% of the time are junk as I only have so many ups and downs left in me.

Another clue to trash is if the detector bounces from Coin to Zinc ONE time it's almost always a bottle cap or someother piece of junk. I do not dig Zinc to Coin jumps, unless I'm in a place that might have old indian head pennies. They will sometimes bounce or hit zinc both ways but most of the time it's junk.

CZ's are nickel magnets, I have found loads of V Nickels & Buffs that other detectorist have left behind. It depends on where your hunting but if you get a solid nickel signal, you have a good chance at a nickel. You will dig some pulltabs but if your in a place that is just not infested with pulltabs you will dig lots of nickels. Old V nickels will some times bounce from Nickel to foil, so be sure and dig all your nickel to foil bounces.

I'm in Texas and I run my CZ pedal to the metal all the time, it will false in trash and at the end of swings, I have learned to deal with this and you will too. I found that lowering the sensitivity has little or no effect on the falsing and end of swings falses, so you just learn to check them as you go along.

Alot of times when I'm in alot of nails, I will turn my disc down to zero and listen to everything, this helps with the nail problem. Other times I disc. out everything but nickels, zinc & Coins and just try and find a 2 way solid coin hit.

It is best when you get a good 2 way hit to turn sideways and see if you get a good 2 way also. If I don't get a good 2 way from both directions, I don't dig but like I said, I'm 60 yrs old.

Another thing is that I use the VCO pinpointing alot to determine what target is, a shallow can or bottle cap will blare back at you most of the time when pinpointing where a coin will sound round, After a while you will know what I mean when I say sound round. A deep round sound is a sweet thing and what you are looking for.

I think the CZ was way ahead of it's time and a once you master the nuances, you will be digging deep silver with it.

If I can be of anymore help just let me know

Enjoy your CZ and get ready to dig some deep holes.

Tico
