CZ-3D frustrated

Maybe this shouldn't have been my first detector ever to get. (but I couldnt pass up the price used) I am a newbie, started late last fall and have finally stopped digging up nails but now I am digging more soda twist caps from the 70's than anything else. I have been doing parks and fairgrounds and have found about $20.00 in clad. I believe the oldest is 1978. yee haaa. Wish there was someone in Northern NH to give me some 1 on 1 help. Yesterday I spent 6 hours in a park covering about a 20ft X 60ft area. I got 10 nickle hits which were pieces of metal yogurt covers and 32 pennies. I am ground balancing and running everything on the red numbers that are recommended. some tips for a newbie would be great.. Cant wait to find something older than me. heading out again on the 4th to finish the park.. thanks..steve

Gotta remember that the 3D is specifically designed to hunt older, pre-1950 sites with little trash. Aluminum tabs, pieces of cans, those thin yogurt and juice tops you mentioned, all wreak havoc on the 3D in enhanced mode because they will hit as high tone.

I suggest if hunting in any parks or tot lots where there will be trash of the above mentioned type, to hunt in salt mode. Dig only the repeatable high tones, and as with any CZ, if in discrimination mode, hunt at 0 so you can hear ALL targets. It helps you make a better decision and you will be less fooled by the iron low tone/high tone bounces.

Stick with the 3D...it is a very good detector, but enhanced mode really should be used, especially if you are new to the machine, in areas where there is less trash.

Last thing...the only place you will find old coins is old areas. Research, ask around, even use some internet tools that can show you arial photos of spots from the 1930's or 40's ( my brother showed me one site, where you can actually see side by side photos of today vs days in the past. Pretty neat stuff as you can see parks today where in the past there may have been fields, barns, farm houses, etc.)

Have fun and keep swinging and when things start to click and you pull up a nice old silver coin, it will be worth it.

go to older parks!..1950's and back!..then try again!

therover gives good advice as CZ3D used correctly is a deep excellent unit, but have to know when to use either mode as enhanced mode used in older places excells in getting the old coins, tokens etc. the other guys miss, however used in newer areas you will dig a lot of junk....and have to change to the salt mode.
Tom Dankowski has an excellent article on the CZ3D so google his name and do some research as it will help....

thanks all for the encouraging info.. The park I am at is across the road from a High school dated back to 1901. just thought I might find some lost old lunch money,

Just got a 3D myself and I have dug my share of bottle tops and nails. The deeper nails are always off to the side of the hole. Thanks for P.Pointers. Ive had a Silver uMax for awhile and you will dig alot or you dont the goodies in heavily hunted areas. You have got to get in the older areas. I have found 3 rings, 6 wheaties, 1 Buffalo Nickel and my first 2 Standing Liberty quarters in the 3 weeks Ive had it. All in parks and areas I hunted with the uMax. These are 50's and 60's era parks w/alot of trash. It would be a tough 1st unit but if you want the old stuff hang in there.

As far as the old rusty nails if you remove a plug and the pinpoint moves bet its a nail on side of original plug..Remember if it don't hit from several directions, really deep maybe only two directions I just leave it lie as its junk...Googles Mikes CZ page and you will find some good CZ tips that cover all CZ models in general...
User friendly to setup CZ's but takes a while in the field to learn and feel at ease using the beast...

try using it in salt w/ discrimination all the way up to the 2nd to last setting, that way youll see SOME of the pennies on the meeter, thats my setting for parks and schools, youll dig modern dimes at 6inches, but its a good setting for the silver also. make sure it hits a hightone on EVERY PASS, and check the size while pinpointing, I skip the nickels on a new site just to avoid most trash, i usually hunt old foundations in the woods in the spring and fall with different settings. wheat pennies will hit high tone on that setting, trust me, i have 2 mason jars full of them. and I cant even count how many walkers ive found. it may seem quiet while hunting, but when it hits on something good, youll know. I use the 10" coil tho, for deeper finds and better target seperation, try these setting out, you may find them easier.

Put your CZ3D in the salt mode and hunt with it.It will ID coins better.Finding old sites without modern trash is just about impossible. On old nickels,if you get a nickle to foil bounce signal dig it.I have found a lot of old nickles that bounce from nickle to foil.I don't know what setting you use but I try to hunt with my sensitivty of 6,only iron discriminated out.If I start getting some iron falsing,it will sometimes give a high coin signal,I'll set my discrimination at zero and check the signal. As I rotate around the signal checking it if you get iron tones it's probably iron.I dig way more "good" coins when I'm using a CZ than any other detector.Silver coins,Wheaties,Indianhead pennies,Buffalo and V-nickles.

well still trying to get used to my cz3d to and i really do like it so far but i found if i listen to all the tones i have a better outcome and i tried running disc 1-2range to eliminate iron but the high tone would break through alot so i decided to listen to everything run sens around bout 4 maybe 5 and going slow over the target is key and detuning over the target, I have dug that rusty old square nail and aluminum bottle cap on the high tone thinking coin sized and well it's probably nature of the beast but at least i've found the tones stay pretty true on deeper targets where the tesoro golden i'use to have after 6" depth would go lower tone sometimes, all i say is this to us guys that just got cz3d's don't give up these they will produce we just got to learn them and yes you going to dig that ocasional nail or bottle cap its just the way it is your not going to eliminate trash totaly unless you got mega bucks for a minelab that will totally eliminate i forget which model it is but anyway these are very capable to do what we want them to do

It takss time to learn ANY machine ......Everybody thinks that there is the ultimate machine that really does it all .....So far the closest machine that I have that comes the closest to doing it all is my Minelab E Trac ......This being said , I STILL dig my share of pull tabs because the fall into the Gold range on the E Trac , so just because you pay $1500 for a Minelab, don't think that we are free from the trash burden ....Maybe not as much , but we still dig some ...... You STILL have to adjust all the variables to be able to get the goodies running an E Trac ...... My point is that no machine will do it all , and you have to learn EVERY machine that you are hunting with .... From what I have read, the CZ-3D sounds like a great machine, but it's a very different machine from the norm with it's tones , etc .....Another thing to remember is that NONE of these machines make targets .....They find them if they are there , but they cannot put a target in the ground for you ....Once you learn your machine , you will better be able to find these targets .....Sooner or later you will be saying " NOW I"VE GOT IT " .....It will all come together , and you will realize what a wonderful machine you have, and all it took was time to learn it .... Good Luck ....Jim

as you mentioned, the tabs fall into the same "range" as the gold..after all these years, separation of these two conductors is
STILL a dice roll on ANY detector no matter what the cost!..ya STILL gotta dig it all in that "range!"

I have yet to find gold myself but MOST gold items will fall in the foil range of MOST detectors. The fact that most people FIND gold in tab range only suggests they're missing more than they're finding. It's simple math when you think about it. Out of every gold ring sold, how many are women's rings? Probably a very high percentage. Women's rings are generally much smaller than men's rings. Smaller gold lands in foil range. Also...of all the rings sold...would you say women's rings or men's rings have more precious stones?? Exactly...women's rings. Now...would you rather dig a chunky men's gold ring in the tab range...perhaps with a garnet or onyx stone or some diamond chips...or would ya rather dig a fine women't ring in the foil range...with a 1/4 carat diamond...or cluster or whatever. Exactly!

I don't know about you guys/gals but I'm gonna shift my interest from tabs to foil for awhile...of course it's just too tempting to dig the odd tab target...especially if you're in a relatively clean area.

Happy Hunting

As for old rusty nails if u run your coil across the nail shaft the CZ will beep in both directions like a coin...now walk around in a the target keep sweeping the coil if the target gives 2 beeps then back, YOU are now going end to end on a old rusty nail .thats how i can tell, and will usaly pinpoint off a little( maybe an inch or 2 depends how big the nail is) of where you first pinpointed it .
thanks Gary G.A.P.metal

Last 3 hunt on the 20th, 22nd and 24th I picked up 58 quarters, 27 NICKELS and 65 dimes. Mine is not a depth monster but it does like nickels!
