CZ-3D and the 5" coil ...

Willee - Texas

Well-known member
Been using the CZ-3D with a 5" coil and really liking the way it works.

Have noticed some things about this detector ...
Sometimes I can get a good high tone that can not be detected in pinpoint mode.
I am thinking this is a large deep target ... certainly not a coin.

On coin sized objects the depth scale seems to be fairly close.
Once in a while I will get a high tone target at 6" but after plugging down 7" my Garrett pinpointer will not detect anything.
It usually turns out to be deep junk.

This coil is VERY sensitive to small items ... found a very tiny wad of pop can aluminum down about 4".
I am talking not much bigger than a BB or a .177 size pellet. (see photo)
That was impressive and now I wonder if this combo would make a good nugget shooter.

Indeed the 5 inch coil is a excellent compliment to the CZ however personally with the amount of detectors you own just might look for a good gold nuggett machine to add to your arsenal as thats what they are made for and will usually outhunt any stock coin and relic unit. Now if your nugget hunting is far and few betweent might try the autotune with the small coil..

Dan, I dont gold nugget hunt but having a detector that sensitive to small bits of gold would be useful on the beach for finding those ear studs and tiny gold chains.

The first CZs were in fact promoted for prospecting as well in the early brochures. With the autotune on and a small coil, in really nasty ultramafic soil, the CZ does really well...in the stuff that makes the Gold Bug II go squirrely.

Is it hipmountable? There is one in the classifieds for $475, is this a good price? thanks and good hunting......

John,

It is hip mountable, but since it has a speaker, is not as weather resistant as the 6a. The 3D is specifically designed to hit certain coins like Indian Heads, V nickels, Buffalos, as a high tone where as the 6a may hit them as mid tone.

If you are going to dig ALL mid and high tone targets regardless and not use the meter, then the enhanced mode is not of any value. The 3D does have 4 tones vs 3 on the 6a...it has a low-mid and high-mid tone ( I think the foil range has it's own tone, which does have value since a lot of smaller, diamond rings fall into that range and if you are looking for those types of targets, you can tone hunt). If you are in an older site and want to only hunt for older coins, then the 3D has the advantage in enhanced mode since you will be only digging high tones and it will bring some of the older coins into that range.

Both units if correctly calibrated are deep seeking. Both units in salt mode are great beach hunters too.

I had a 3D, 1021 serial number and it was a great unit. Since I don't coin hunt in older pre-1950 era sites ( where the 3D in enhanced mode would have value), and have two 6a's, I sold mine. Sometimes I wish I didn't !

The unit for sale at $475 is really clean, is a 1021 serial number (a Los Banos unit which is correctly calibrated since it can hit the dime in that air test), and Chris is a great guy to deal with . I was actually thinking of getting it but I just have too many units and 3 CZ's to boot.

If you don't have a CZ, I would say this is a really good buy.

If you hunt real old places the CZ3D excells in enhanced mode but suffers in the regular mode for local hunting as its locked in salt mode. As far as depth, stability lets call it a draw in enhanced and a slight disadvantage in regular mode on the CZ3D depending on the tuning of either unit...Really like the weather resistant features of the CZ6A especially in salt water enviroment or those days when a slight drizzle can ruin your day..All in all have a super hot CZ5 and if I hunt old places just watch the nickle-foil bounce for old nickles and of course watch square tab which is relic on the 3D and gives me just about the same results. So if you have a hot analog CZ in my mind no reason to change.
