CZ-21 beach settings

Just curious if I set my Discrimination to 1 if I would be blocking out any gold? Should I leave it on 0 and just dig it all? I am just starting out with this detector so any tips on settings would be appreciated thanks.

I think scubadetector can answer this question since he's the grand master of the CZ-21.HH tigerhank68

yeah I was hoping he ran across this one.

You want to hear the Iron. With the CZ's, if a good target is next to some Iron and you have you iron discriminated out, you could discriminate the good target out. Doe that make sense to you?

Makes since to me thanks.

Better target ID is a good reason to keep the discriminator setting on 0 and not 1. Iron targets will bounce high tone with a moderate sweep speed. Doesn't happen much in the water since the water slows the sweep down with the drag on the coil; but it can happen. Over wet sand it is easy to sweep a CZ too fast. If you are hunting with discriminator set at 1 and the iron goes high tone, you will dig the iron and be disappointed. If you listen to all tones, and you get a high tone, slow the sweep down over the target. If it goes solid low tone as you sweep slow, you can be very sure it is iron. Most bouncing tones get dug. Any low-tone to mid-tone bounce is, for me, a must dig target.

Another way to hunt a CZ is in autotune (all-metal). Normally requires setting the sensitivity up to get an audible threshold. Can actually sweep the wet sand faster than in discrimination mode and listen for a threshold change. Then, directly over the target, sweeping slowly, change from autotune to discrimination of 0 and ID the target. With the sensitivity set high, it is easy to false in discrimination mode. If you are just hunting in discrimination mode, set the sensitivity lower, say the 3 to 5 range based on when you aren't getting false hits.

Note the deep gold hit with low tone on the CZ!!

I hunt in all metal, then just switch to 0 disc to check if the tone is iron. In all metal I can tell roughly how deep and/or large the target is and pick up on little whispers - if it's larger or shallow sounding (say less than 4-5 inches deep), and it sounds off as iron from every direction and never "bumps up" to a mid or high tone, I don't dig it - if it sounds small or deep in all metal, I start digging it even if it gives iron tone in disc. 0.

Quite often, you'll find that an iron tone on a deep target will all of a sudden bump up to a mid or even high tone after your first scoop of 5-7 inches of sand comes off. I've dug my share of gold rings that way.

If you'd rather not hunt in all metal, just use disc. 0 so you hear the low tone iron grunts.

It totally depends on the area I am in if I have it on 0 or 1. If there is lots of iron I have it on 1. I still get good targets next to iron because the beeps break up BUT they are still there. You will NOT discriminate gold out at 1. I found this ring two days ago. (shiney one middle top row)

It is 10K and super small. Beautiful mid tone. The 10K to the right of it was at least 10 inches deep and I got totally iffy signal Got it out of a bunch of bobby pins. I think it was the deepest ring I have found.

Some areas that I have never hunted DRIVE me BATTY with beeps. Tons of good and bad targets all in one spot. If I even hear a broken high beep I dig. I also swing a 10" coil so you really have to know your machine to realize that target seperation is non existent sometimes.

If you hit places without much iron or targets then for sure use 0.

I hipmount my machine cause I dive and Cubfan's way works for him. I don't want to find the knobs while I am playing.

Thanks for all of the knowledgeable responses everyone. Hoping to go test it out this afternoon HH

I chest mount one and don't dive, so that's why I hunt in all metal most of the time and check the signals by switching back and forth from all metal to 0 disc. If I dove like scubadiver does, I'd likely hunt the same way he does - 0 or 1 depending on what I feel like at the moment.

By the way scubadiver - I made a couple contacts recently to see what it takes to get dive certified. The wife isn't too thrilled as I have enough hobbies as it is, plus I have to get a few major honey-do's completed before I can spend the $ to do it, but over the last year I've come to the conclusion that "in the water" is the last bastion for virgin metal detecting territory. Don't know if it's the economy or all the "treasure hunter" shows on TV, but going to the beach in the morning used to be more fun when it was just 3-5 people detecting - now on a typical Saturday/Sunday morning it's more like 8-14 guys detecting.

Hopefully I'll be water bound soon.

I find stuff in 2' - 15' of water and as most new stuff is dropped in shallow water, in the old days people did swim over their heads a LOT. A LOT of lakes in Michigan also had platforms made from 55 gallon drums. Now because of liability laws you don't see too many. Its awsome to come across where one was and find old silver and gold that was dropped off it. Its also GREAT to find where a boat turned over and rods, tackleboxs and guns are found in the spot.

ALL of the old gold rings I find are in water that is over the waders heads. I know for sure EVERY lake I hit is also hit by waders with detectors. When no air conditioners were around, people found water to play in.

One of the fellows who I'm hoping to have "mentor" me on the do's and dont's of underwater searching mostly does diving for bottles - when I spoke to him last he said he has lots of places that still give up hundreds of old bottles and other assorted relics. He seems to do lots of river hunting and likes to go down to the bottom, face the current and then fan the lighter silt and stuff and basically just expose stuff to be found. He uses a detector too, so I'm hoping I can get enough tips and help from him that I can go out and lake hunt once I'm certified as well and hopefully do ok.

I grew up in Michigan and remember very well all the barrel bottom floating rafts - in fact, my dad even built a pontoon boat using barrels and we used to go out on a little lake we had a cottage on and go fishing all the time.

By next year, I'm sure my find tallies will go up - plus to be honest, I'm sorta looking forward to hunting in peace and quiet.

The CZ21 is a great detector that does a lot of things. I've always used mine on Auto and then confirmed targets on "0" . One thing for sure is that you will loose depth if you try to knock out the iron. Many say that it will go deeper in disc mode at the "0" setting and I've seen either to be true (going in afer myself in either disc or Auto). A pro I hunt with uses his in Auto with both the Sens and Boost (Vol.) up full in salt water. Here's a picture of my custom '21 with MGM phones. These are especially good in the Auto mode . A big part of learning this detector is recognisng how good signals sound in the all-metal mode--narrow, uniform (round) and sharper than iron. Get in some practice at the bench and I'm sure you will have some good finds ahead.

Clive,
I really like the looks of that headphone set up. The standard CZ20 (and I presume the CZ21) are a little better than the standard Excal's but neither are great. I really need to do something like you've done for both my CZ and Excal.
Thanks for sharing your ideas and providing some inspiration!
Cheers,

The mod was done by the man himself MGM. It's a bit clunkey with the big Ikalite plug. It needs a lot of strain relier to not flop around but it is watertight and secure. Great tone too.
The small "Bucanneer" connectors don't have a good rep. cjc
