cw relics and x-terra 50

Is anyone using the x50 for relic hunting in the northwest Georgia area? Just bought an x50 and was wondering what to expect performance wise. I did take it to an old church that was part of a small union camp. People quit hunting this site 20 yrs ago. It is very trashy ground. Was able to pull out 2 minie balls, a 1939 mercury dime and 3 wheat cents. All surrounded by cut up aluminum and deeper iron. Just wondering what to expect in the woods and pastures.

Thanks,
Barry

Most relics your looking for will be metal. Just decide if your going to dig iron or not and dig everything else. You really only need a "beep dig" machine to relic hunt. The 50 is several steps above that. I know my HFDD10.5 coil goes very deep. I didn't expect that from a DD coil. But the stock coil goes deep also.

Thanks for your reply.........I have used many different detectors over the past 30 years. Some would not handle the mineralization in the NW GA. area. I traded in a Fisher 1266x on the x50. The 1266x was extremely noisey in our mineralized ground and I know the noise was masking deeper signals, do you think I will have this problem with x50?

Thanks,
Barry

If I was you I would just get out there and try it. Then let us know how it handled the ground.

If you are hunting in highly mineralzed ground, you will probably find that the DD coils will work better for you. The 1266 spider coils are concentric. And concentric coils do not generally perform well in highlyy mineralzed soil. My recommendation would be to try out the coil that comes with your detector. If it is new, you will get the 9-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz. The X-50 can also accomodate the 6-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz, the 6-inch DD at 18.75 kHz, the round 9-inch concentric at 18.75 kHz, the 6 X 10 elliptical at 18.75 kHz, the 10.5-inch DD at 7.5 kHz or the 10.5-inch DD at 18.75 kHz. If you determine you want to get an additional coil, I'd recommed the 10.5-inch DD at 7.5 kHz for relic hunting in highly minerlized soil. The 6-inch DD at 18.75 is one of my favorites for hunting trashy areas around farmsites and homesteads. It offers excellent target separation. But it won't get the depth of the 10.5, if that is an issue for you. JMHO HH Randy

Thanks guys. The 10.5 DD @ 7.5kHz is something that I will definitely look into. I will hit the woods and fields as soon as the copperheads and rattlers are not a problem. I will post my experiences, though limited, here as it may help others.

Thanks Again,
Barry

The 10.5 7.5KHz seems to be the hands down favorite for relics. Couple that with the little 18.75KHz DD and you should have a good kit for relic wrangling. Appreciate you posting your results to keep the "Brotherhood of the traveling coils":beers: informed.

Well, I got a 10.5" DD @ 7.5kHz yesterday. Went to a hillside in Resaca, Ga. that is always good for fired minie or two. I decided to brave the snakes because I couldn't wait. It was obvious someone had recently hunted there as they left holes open. Anyway, the x50 GB'ed at 8 and was pretty darn stable, which is something I haven't been used to in a long time. I hunted in All Metal and listened to the tones. I quickly dug a very small piece of lead at about 4" with nail readings on either side. After about 30 min. of no good signals and seeing too many open holes I went to the bottom of the hill and got a signal that gave a low tone like iron but quickly changed to a medium tone that repeated. It was a dropped 58 cal. minie at about 6" or so. Got the same type of signal about a foot away from the first, another minie ball at the same depth. The meter showed 27 and wish I had looked at the depth meter, but I didn't.

My question; Is it a characteristic of the DD coil to give a low then med. tone on a good target in the ground. I did check both targets in pattern 1 and got only the med. tone. The coil air reads a minie ball with only the medium tone and seems to very sensitive. Speaking of which, I had the sensitivity maxxed at 20.
