Found these at the same location and was wondering if the bird may be a carved bullet and if the button is Civil War period. Sorry for the size of the picture but haven't learned to make them smaller yet.
 
The button is a US general service coat button issued to enlisted men, by the military, between the years 1855-1884...Look on the back for the manufactuers marks, two of the most common was Scovill, and Horstman, both made in Waterbury Connecticut..
