cut silver

I dug a silver half dime today that was bent and cracked by using iron mask -10, sensitivity 30, deep recovery, which gave an erratic signal, only in one direction, and a low tone similar to a shot gun shell.(the coin ws at about 6 to 7 inches) I asume the shape of the coin being bent and cracked caused the one way signal, but is this what I should expect when hunting for small cut silver reals and half reals? Do any of you guys find the cut stuff (particularly the "pie" shaped small pieces)with any consistancy at depth, and what settings do you recomend so as not to tune out these coins? Thanks for the help.. John I. in N.J.
