Cut Penny- Any idea why?

I hope my posts aren't perceived as stupid or ridiculous but I believe that if you have a question...ask. That being said, take a look at my finds photo especially the penny in the upper left corner. That's actually the pieces of 2 different pennys. I found them at the soccer field I usually hunt a couple of days ago. They look like they've been cut with a pair of cutters or something. Do you think that someone is planting those on the field to discourage metal detecting? Those are the only ones I've found so far and maybe I'm over reacting but them who knows?
Another sort of weird thing happened while I was there that day. It was last Thursday afternoon and I had just a little while to MD so I went to the field. I was working the goal area nearest the main road when I noticed a large delivery style truck going real slow and the driver watching me.He drove back and forth past me at least 4 times, then he pulled into the parking lot and drove to the furthermost end of the parking lot away from me and I lost interest in him. I'm gonna say he was probably 150 yards from me. I use a single ear headphone so I can hear my GTI in one ear and what ever else is going on in the other. Anyway, all of a sudden I heard this guy yell something at me. I'm not sure what he said but it sounded like maybe " Hey, what are you doing?" Well, I don't make it a habit to yell back at someone 150 yards away so I ignored him and kept detecting.I kept an eye on him and he got out of his truck and walked to the rear of it, opened the rear door and went into it for a little while, then jumped back out of it got back in his truck and drove off, not to be seen again. Hey, I don't know what he wanted. He may have just wanted directions or something. I just thought is was a little weird. I finished my hunt and left until another day.

Some interesting finds.
Some kid may have cut the penny out of boredom just for something to do.

Hay Curt,

Nice goin.

Don't worry about drunks and druggies in delivery trucks,

unless you and they are alone. They might try ta rob ya.

I've found several cut pennies. I think if they were tryin ta

mess with MD'ers, they have a dumb hobby....lol

Stand tall, be proud.

Be tha one whoes responsible and a credit to tha place

you're at.

That's who we are.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

About the delivery truck guy. Some people brains can't lock on to the fact we're just doing this for fun and just looking for lost coins and jewelry. You weren't pulling up treasure chests (or digging big holes) so he just got bored and left. (Headphones are the perfect "crowd control" for that type!)

Found all four pieces to a "lawnmower penny" once! If I can find the 2x2, I'll post it.

hi rose, i don't think it's a stupid or ridiculous question. i've always known you to make good posts, and ask good questions. that's why it's a forum! the great thing about it is, anytime i have a question concerning our hobby, i know that i can come on here and not be ridiculed [haha, there ARE limits to that] the cent is probably the result of a bored kid in a nearby school shop. i've found many like it, and can recall doing it myself a couple of times when i was a kid.
maybe the delivery guy wanted to give you a loaf of bread. who knows? hh,

Hey Curt I agree with the pennie, either a lawnmower or a bored kid. As to the truck driver? I dunno I would not worry about him. Keep your eyes open and your wits about you. Good hunting, Beale.,

To everyone who finds cut coins , it's from rotary lawn mowers not the kind the have a blade that spin like a helicopter. Blade mowers hit the coin a fire them away usually bending the coin. The rotary style mowers cut the coins as you have found. As for kids....well kids will be kids.

I've mangled coins in every kind of way as a kid - for no reason other than to be a kid. I used to make arrow heads out of them, even.
Its either that or the lawnmower, for the one cent coin.

The weird delivery truck guy? Well, it rarely bodes well when the question is "WHAT are you doing?!" (as opposed to "HOW are you doing?" )

He could have been an employee of the city or parks and recreation dept, worried about your digging. Or he could have been a concerned citizen, worried about the same thing. Or maybe a kid's league coach, fussing over the fields "his" kids play on.

Too, he may have just been a weird, small minded citizen. A small number of people feel it's their little role in life to be a fascist and control what you are doing - whether it's any of their business or not. I've been approached by them on rare occasions, wondering what I'm doing and if it is legal.

Considering his less-than-confrontational attitude, I'd go back often until that person showed up again. I mean if all he's going to do is gesture from across the field, I simply could not rest until we had it out.
More than likely, he's just a citizen Nazi... a blowhard with a chip on his shoulder.

He may have just been curious. Pennies look like they went through a mower or the aerator they run over the soccerr fields.
