Cut nail VDI question

Sgt. Silverman

Active member
Is anyone else finding a more than normal amount of cut nails because of positive VDI readings? Each one of these nails ranged from +74 to +90 VDI at depths of 7 inches and greater. There was no bounce back to iron, only positive jumps from penny dime to quarter and then back. I

Make sure to cross check at a 90 degree angle and look for splatter. You might try backing down on your RX to 11 or 12. With that much iron in the ground you might want to consider Correlate mode, and narrow your Span setting until the nails start breaking up. Next time you have a hit like this experiment over it until it starts to break up a bit. Make sure and dig it to confirm that it's a nail after your done. I dig a nail now and then myself. If your looking for deep coins or coins in the trash your gonna dig a few nails. It's OK, it just means your in the right neighborhood!

Listen to Cybersage, he knows his stuff! Backing the Rx works for me. I can back it down to 6 sometimes when the iron is too heavy but you'll still get great depth. If you are in heavy iron I can't see hitting a coin at more than 7" or 8" anyway, so dropping the RX even further won't hurt depending on conditions. Find a deep target and see what I mean, I did it in my coin garden.

I have heavy iron here and outside of running correlate (which you should play with when you find another nail!) I think BCR would help some. Try a setting of 2 to 4 imo, more than that and you might start losing coins. Again, play with the settings once you find what might be a cut nail.

All the best,
EMS

Thanks Cybersage & Earthmansurfer, I appreciate the input and I will adjust accordingly!
