Custom "All Metal" Program

You all know how most of us like to use "all metal" when we hunt because you get more depth.. And you all know how when we first turn on the Xtrra 70 it's always on Pattern One.
Well I always space it out and forget to set it back to "all metal" (when I take a break while detecting..Like when the kids run up and ask what I'm doing or I have a smoke.)
So I thought to myself why not just un-notch everything in pattern one and not worry about it? That way when i do have to turn off the Xterra for some reason it will be in a all metal when
i turn it back on. Right? Now I'm just wondering. With all the vales un-notched in program one, will the depth be that of "all metal" because there isnt any discrimination? I would think so.
What do you think?

Now that's a good question. On many detectors, hunting in disc with the disc set to minimum does not get the same depth as a true all metal mode. But with the 70 I'm not sure. Maybe Randy or one of the other gurus will chime in.

here is a recent post where I talked about that setup. see paragraph 3

By the way, the "all metal" mode is not a true all metal. I prefer to think of it as a non-adjustible "zero discrimination" mode. As such, a Pattern that has been set up with "zero discrimination" should not perform any differently than "all metal". JMHO HH Randy

I have found that my notch detectors loose no depth when targets are notched out. I do know that my progressive discriminating detectors did loose depth the more you increase the disc knob.

Do a test with the notch detectors by waving a coin by the coil. Then notch out all segments except the coin notch. Or try it in your test garden.

Depth is not decreased but the ability to recover from a rejected target and hit a good target right next to it is why I think rejecting less notches is better. This shouldn't be confused with pure depth. It just seems to me that you can better hear a good target next to a bad one.

I also think the less you ask of your detector the better it will run. It just might be my way of thinking. I'm no expert on electronics. But I think if I have tracking off and run in all metal or little disc. the detector has less to process.

Thanks for directing me there Digger! And I learned it's the negetive key and not the positive key we hit to run the GB hot reading that post.:clapping:

I don't swear that hitting the negative key will make anything hot. :hot: What I believe is that adjusting with the negative key (fooling the X-70 into thinking their is a greater degree of mineralization) makes it have a more positive (coil / soil) phase relationship. As such, I think mine is a bit more stable and allows me to set the sensitivity higher. Again, I'm not saying that is the best way for others to set theirs up. :stars: But it works well for me.
