I just finished reading about the archaeologist Richard Fox who was instrumental in rewriting the history of Custer's last stand. He used approx. 60 volunteers with metal detectors to map primarily the firearms artifacts and to scrutinize those in a forensic manner to determine the eb and flow of the battle and its participants. Really a fascinating read. But to the point. Its been a bit over 120 years since the battle and most of the artifacts dug were within 6 inches of the surface. Just an interesting side note. Tortoise
