What do civil war relics (buttons, buckles, bullets, etc.) tend to read as. More like coins or closer to iron?

Depends on the detector that you use. Most good machines will register a nice soft tone when you hit a good relic. Iron usually has a harsh sharp tone or will null out depending on your sensitivity setting.

well I'm kinda new to detecting and am on my first detector which I got for Christmas. Its a titan 1000xd, I haven't even seen it on this site so I don't know if you know anything about it or if its considered a good detector.

I have a MXT and all of what you mention has a good solid ring (as a coin would) Sometimes real small buttons might be borderline but 99% of everything you mention rings good.
