Curious about my fellow "Swingers" :detecting:

New member
I've been swingin one off & on for over 30 years now & in years past, I knew very few people that didn't think I was "a little weird!" Since I "discovered the forums just a month or so ago, I've learned that there's a lot of other "weird" folks out there & here's some quick observations...
Patriotic, Love for History & our American heritage, Natural sense of curiosity, Sense for adventure etc... Actually, I've learned from many posts, youtube Vids & phone conversations that I'm in pretty darn good company as I've met some really great guy's who will bust their butts to help someone out!
So, what else do we have in common? What hobbies/interests do we share? I'm a former Pro. Drummer, Musician, Singer/Songwriter, published author, photographer webmaster & formerly the worlds best Bass fisherman! LOL - along with a great respecter of those who have served their country! - What about you guys?? What other things besides 'Tectin are y'all into?? Just curious bout my new extended family of "weirdo's!!"

I guess your right about us Pirate, I really enjoy the thrill of the chase, the whole "todays the day" mindset..getting up early and putting in a few miles swinging coil and watching the World wake up..I also like boats, wooden ones mostly, and build them when I can. Something about getting some wood and building a boat by eye, creating a vehicle that could take a person somewhere else on the planet. Lets see, I've lived in seven of these United States, been a poor grave digger, and a semi wealthy sales guy, presently I'm somewhere in between. I used to trap, alot, and the skills aquired there cross over to detecting...looking for sign, paying attention to the travel and habits of creatures. I teach some wilderness survival, just a weird blend of being comfortable in a boardroom or a swamp. I really like this Planet, and am sorry I dont have more time here to see it all, but through the eyes of fellow posters, at least I get a glimpse. Thanks for sharing your background, yep, we'd get along just fine!

Musician here also, play bass (electric and upright). Plant Manager at a yarn processing mill in Dalton, Ga. Been relic hunting since 1978. Started with the old Fisher VLF 441. I'll be jamming on some Bluegrass today....way to hot for detecting around here.

Guitar player for 27 years....also enjoy arrowhead hunting & collecting....fascinated with American history. Enjoy spending quality time with my wife & children.....just need to get them hooked on detecting and everything would be damn near perfect..lol.

Ditto on everything you said Pirate. I'm from the lower eastern shore of Delaware. I really just love being out doors. I'm a US Army veteran, avid outdoors man, as patriotic as you can get. Love this country, one day I'm gonna see more of it. My hobby's are Hunting Whitetail in the fall and winter, surf fishing in the spring summer and fall and of course i enjoy a little bass fishing as well. Love getting out with my detector, don't care if I make that great find every time although it's great when I do. Enjoy meeting like minded people who share the same interests as I do, that really enjoy just getting out and taking in what mother nature has to offer. The history is another thing that intrigues me, the what, when, where, how thing, really cool finding old stuff that someone lost long ago. HH, Joe.

I am an avid outdoorsman. Collected guns and arrowheads for many years, handgun, bow and shotgun hunted for whitetail deer. Been detecting for a tad over 30 years and still love it as much as when I first started hunting. Love collecting old bottles and digging for them in dumps.
Enjoy motorcycles and ATV'S and like riding with friends. Also like to fish and sit around a campfire with friends and have a couple cold Buds. About the only things I won't do are bungee jumping and sky diving.......those guys are nuts. :surprised:
Also like to do some wood working but haven't touched the tools in a couple of years. If it involves being outside I'm up for it....

I've played guitar for about 39 yrs. ( about 90 percent blues ). I get weak kneed when I hear an electric guitar screaming the blues. I too have hunted and bought arrowheads and other american indian relics since about 1966. Hunted and fished with my dad for many years. I think I was very fortunate as a young kid in that my dad was mandatorily retired from John Deere when I was about six years old. He had rheumatoid arthritis. Our family was really pretty poor, but I got to spend a lot of time with my dad. Probably more time than the average kid. Fell in love with muscle cars from the mid-sixties to the early seventies. My wife and I are really into aquaria; mainly African cichlids. Always wanted a metal detector since about age 25. Got one when I turned 57. Been detecting for about 2.5 months. This is a great forum with many folks that are willing to share priceless experience. Thanks to this site. ><>

Wandering soul !

I too have been swinging a machine off and on for over 30 years now. I think my parents bought me one to keep me out of the house. I fell in love with it. The first item I found was a CW powder flask on a CW battle field. I was hooked. I am a Registered Nurse by education, but only practiced nursing for 5 years at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in ICU. I now pay my bills in Medical Sales. I love this hobby and got my best friend into it as well as countless others along the way, including my dad in the end. Anyway, good question. It is a very diverse hobby with folks from all walks of life - but we all enjoy the hunt and the history it brings back to life!

I'm just a couch potato? Does that count?

Started out ghost towning before I got married. Got out of it for wife & kids & need to make a living to support them. Got back to it (this time with a metal detector) after the kids got through school & the employer didn't like employees who'd had a serious illness. Said "what the hey" grabbed the detector & went hunting.

I've been metal detecting for about one year. When I'm not doing that then I get back into
my Portrait Painting and Photography as seen below.

I would imagine that most of us have a fishing pole or ten somewhere within reach......When we are channel surfing we are sure to hit the History Channel to see if anything interesting is on.
Let/s see, what other similarities would we have????
I imagine most of us have a favorite pair of shoes we would wear every day to any place if our spouse didn't give us "that look"...We could care less what others think.
I think many of us are a bit interested in sociology. The study of why and where people do what they do. Makes it easier to zero in on a coin spill if you know where the people loitered fifty years go.
Those are just a few of the things I believe we M.D's have in common.

Thanks for the response guys! I'm amazed at the similarities we have! Lots of Musicians which is interesting! Lot's of fishermen which I expected. Photography seems to be another commonality & of course our love for history! In short, seems we're a darn diverse & talented group of folks!! :beers:

I don't have a lot of time for hobbies, sorry to say.

Aside from detecting, I like to get lost in a good book when I can.

Man, I sound dull! :sadwalk:

When I'm not detecting I paint and sell prints of my art.
Also do some fishing whenI can.

I am a U.S Army veteran and currently an investigator for a branch of the federal govt, but I chafe at government regulation and bureaucracy. I have always been a treasure hunter, squirrel hunter and fisherman. Supported myself by trapping when I was teen and sometimes made more than my dad. Started collecting junk when I was 12. I love the hunt more than anything and it fits my job well. Soon to retire and hunt as often as I like.
