Culpeper, Va. question....:minelab:

Not sure, as i'm not from that area. However, I do have 2 observations relating. I am currently driving thru from a trip to Shanandoha Valley. Have noticed the red soil, so maybe that indicates clay! The second thing us alot of civil war signs in the road, so the area must be good. Looks like its remote enough to not be a primary location, meaning it shouldn't be hunted out. Good luck though! Wish I had access to an area like that. HH

From what I have read on the forums, the CTX and VLF detectors will work but the target ID will be way off due to the underlying bedrock and not so much from the red clay. Targets that would normally read non-ferrous will show up in the iron range. I think if you dig all targets, you will find some goodies, but the CTX is not a substitute for a PI detector that rein supreme there. You might try getting some feedback from the guys on the Civil War forum too.....

Charles,

I have not used my CTX in the Culpeper area yet but have used my Safari with some success. Like Larry (IL) said, targets sound very different there. Whether from the soil conditions or the bedrock, you have to take the approach of relearning your machine at first. The Safari was very consistent there, lead sounded very different from what I would expect elsewhere, but all the lead sounded the same. Different, but the same. Brass at all depths sounded good but lead was sketchy.

Both my digging buddies also got CTXs (and one also got GPX, I am so jealous) so we will all be using them there for the first time. Which dig are you attending? We are doing the Relic Rescue hunt at the end of March.

Looking forward to finding some keepers. Not just for myself...but my 34 year old son is attending for the first time...I've been to several in the past. Good luck to you and happy hunting.
