Don't have to but highly recommend. I wouldn't be surprised if Bart's stock doesn't already have it installed since the last firmware update was in October of 12.
Did the Exchange software say it was required?
The firmware updates gave you saltwater mode, pinpoint lock,and some stability improvements.

download x change 2 from minelab, don't use the cd you got. then if plug in the machine and if there is a exclemation point on the screen you need to download the firmware. If x change won't download, you will have to disable your security, download, and then reenable your security.
