CTX Sensitivity Panel Display

Buried Crap NJ

New member
Again I am new to this these type of options and I found this one.pg.21 diplay of the sensitivity panel. If used in Auto It will show when the ground changes as you move by adjusting automaticly. In manual it will show what is selected and what is reccomened to what type of ground your in!
Now for those who know the inner workings no big deal for those novice it a part of the learning curve. I have only beach hunted thus far and it was interesting to see that the ground could change so often in a short walk. Now I know that there are those that will aways think more is better and push the sensitivity to the max.(Chatter) I have found more often, that less works better. I have tested some detected targets on the beach and found that. When running manual 22 and they clearly sounded off good but if I lowered the sens. to 12 or 14 they sounded better and the co-fe numbers locked on at one number and don't jump from around by as many as 12 positions. Now none of the target were very deep maybe 12 inches and for the beach 18 or 20 is a deep target. And if your hunting for big 8's then 30 inches is deep. I know a couple of the South Jersey Boys have been testing the dept of reale's with the 3030 and they are tight lipped, but happy on the results! BCNJ

Your findings carries weight and common characteristics with all of the detectors I have used over the years. High sensitivity will help you get some depth at the expense of losing stability and reliability. There are times when reduced sensitivity is better though. One example is when I was working a tot lot yesterday I reduced Auto to -3 but I should have gone to manual and lower yet, that allowed me to get closer to the support poles and swings and the trash was more audio identifiable from the good targets as well. Sensitivity is just another tool to help you get the best from your CTX.

copper pieces, brass pieces, alum pieces..............clad coins........... in a salt water conductive zone.

less is better

I put the sensitivity readout's on the detect screen today and noticed a really low recommended value of "8". Any ideas of what this actually means? I've been running auto lately (and pushing to +3) and could not see anything deeper than 5" or so, mostly 4" pennies and junk targets.

Could one infer highly mineralized ground from this? I tried manual sense and 19 seemed to be ok but higher would get choppy audio.

High mineralization can mean many things, but I would guess you might have a lot of iron in the ground.

Buried Crap NJ (Love you handle LOL!) - In my somewhat iron mineralized ground and with low EMI where I hunt, I often get recommended sensitivities on both the E-Trac and CTX in the mid range. On 8" - 9" coins, which seems to be approaching the depth limits in this ground, running manual 30 always gave a better signal than any sensitivity settings below 23 ish. I do think it's a ground dependent thing. I'm just saying that because one spot might not have the same characteristics as the next.

horikindaguy - What Larry said and it should be easy to check. Just run with disc and see if you hear a big null ;-) You might want to try running the ground coin setting and see how that effects your VID's and overall performance. I'd be curious as well to see if a manual GB changes anything for you, if your reading is from mineralization though.

When you get a deeper target in your ground, see how high you can run manual on it and see if it helps or hurts the signal. That should be telling. (If EMI allows for that.)
