CTX relic hunting in VA?

Has anyone used the CTX in Virgina for Civil War relic hunting? How did it preform in there soil and do you have any suggestions for settings?

Not yet, trying to get buddy off his @55 to line up Richman camp site. Hope CTX performs for my first CW hunt.

My first detector was a 'broom stick' model-home brew for sure.
A one tube BFO with a tank circuit for a search coil the fixed osc. taped to a real broom stick!!
You had to cup your hand around the tube when the wind blew to keep it from drifting off frequency!!
Walked over a million relics in the 1950's but was able to glen a few and eye balled rifles, shells, belt buckles in Bull Run creek until we got tired of wading in the water!!
Met old man Harry Pulliam who owned a relic shop, Wildnerness Outpost-he was so ugly he was scary but had a barn full of relics he found just by walking along the trenches of Chancellorsville, Wildnerness, Spotsylvania etc.-I was in his shop in the late 50's when a damn Yankee visitor walked in and GAVE him a beautiful NY Belt plate-gold plated-he was scared the FEDS would lock him up for finding it!! Harry just smiled and thanked him!!

His gr-aunt was the Widow Tapp-who was there for the battle of the Wildnerness-they were on the road leaving their home and had to get out of the way of charging artillery and had to move off the shoulder of the road-a wagon of wounded Confederates stopped directly in front of her and the blood ran out of the wagon and splashed on her only dress!!!

Kids today haven't a clue!!

WHAT???

I've been Civil War Relic hunting a field in VA but so far I haven't found any Civil War Relics (not because of any issues with the detector, just because I haven't found any yet). I have found some 1950's and early 1960's bottles about knee deep (about 21"-22" deep). So the size of the metal detected at this depth was only the bottle tops of 3 bottles in close proximity.

This was using the 11" coil, the Pattern 2 of the Beach Mode (wide open screen), High Trash selected, recovery deep was off, recovery fast on. The soil was the famous Virginia red clay (except for the top 6" or so.) To me it is surprising what small pieces of metal the 3030 will detect even below 1 foot.

Tony http://www.findmall.com/profile.php?86,28758 suggested using Ferrous Coin in his post: (A Tale Of Two Fields! http://www.findmall.com/read.php?86,2110743,2112690#msg-2112690 )...something I haven't done yet but want to check out.

Not much info here.

Good luck hunting!
