Has anyone experienced this....i see a 12-42 to 12-48 but no sound as i pass coil over the "target",should i be digging these signals?

Detecting is always done with sound. Listen for good tone before you ever look at the screen. Those numbers are not correct. That is your detector evaluating the target. If it is a good target the detector will tell you with the appropriate tone. Remember ears first. You are listening for a good repeatable tone.

Sounds like the machine is nulling out over iron or a target that you have discreminated out. Move on until you get a good signel both ways after making a cross check.

I think that you are right about nulling but, if the iron is close to the target, there may be no position in which one will get a clear signal. I suggest turning to a blank screen. Now, watch out! Many of the default CTX screens that look blank are not blank - they have discriminated a single iron line at the very bottom. I found that out the hard way... Anyway, go to a blank screen, turn the target trace ON and swing. The sound of the target should come through the sound of the junk and you should see a tight cluster in the good area of the screen and a cluster at the bottom. The one at the bottom of the screen would be the one that caused nulling. if that happens, I'd dig to check. YMMV
