It is better in that it can get you into the surf zone to get jewelry on the beach. I havent found anything except silver rings on land with the Etrac. The CTX can see thru iron trash a bit better I would say. The Etrac is not the best for small jewelry, I have read. Coming to a Minelab machine, one of the harder things in getting used to the target ID numbers, and when to dig or not dig the iffy signals. I read alot of forum posts before I purchased the Etrac and was pretty good on knowing what numbers meant for targets. I did alot of air testing and wrote all the numbers down. My friend went from a whites VX3 to the CTX and he didnt take very long to figure out the machine, he just watched some videos and did some field testing. Make sure you read the manual well, and if you can get Andy Sabish's Etrac book that will help you out, as most of the controls are similar.
it a faster machine, which results in better target separation. I started detecting last year in July and have 182 silvers with the CTX. I have been mostly hunting pounded sites. It has a good learning curve, but one day you just get it. There are lots of resources online to speed you up
I find it really copes with trashy areas better that my Etrac did. It can see and identify multiple targets at once whereas the Etrac had issues with that. It has a faster processor so you can move a little quicker if you want to. You can d a lot of customization of the tones and types of discrimination. The best part for me is that I can take it in the lake and not be afraid to drop it in.
With the help and setup I give you its very easy to learn. Once you the the hang of it I can show you a few more things to turn it into a BEAST! I don't know if I would say the Minelab CTX 3030 is BETTER than the Minelab E-Trac but it locks on to targets much better even in high trash and iron and much more stable. Of course it has many obvious upgrades, Wireless, waterproof, GPS, target trace... etc.
Feel free to call me with questions. I have many hours on both and would love to explain everything about the two.
