CTX in the water

Hey, guys. I'm absolutey loving my CTX on land. It really does well and hits harder on targets than my E-Trac. No complaints on land but in water (I only hunt in fresh water lakes) the detector really seems like a dud to me. It just doesn't hit hard on good targets. I've been using the Beach mode, low trash, deep off, fast off. I've so far found a bug platinum ring an 18K ring and a 14K ring but I pretty disappointed with how choppy and broken up the signals are - even on a nickel 3 inches down. I was missing my Excal so bad that I had to buy a long shaft for my SCUBA Excal so I could be happy wading again. I also ordered a CZ21 today. Just not happy in the water with the CTX. Any suggestions?

Yes, first off I would try using ferrous coin, deep on, and running sensitivity as high as you can stand. Also max out your gain,

Also if you're sticking to fresh water forget about beach mode. That's just my opinion.

There is a software update you can download through the Xchange 2 for beach and water hunting also pin point lock..........Quiets the detector noise where you can run sensitivity at times at 30..

Thanks, guys. I have the latest software update. It's the choppy response I get from what should be solid targets that bugs me. I'll try using deep on. It may help because it is supposed to exaggerate target response.

Hey all haven't been in the water for awhile but when I am I run an open screen and anything from 12-03 to 12 -29 can be gold. I pulled 6 or 7 thin gold rings out of where I had all ready worked with the excal wide open.I can't tell you right now where I have my bin's set but will try to post tomorrow. Set right it's a killer water machine.Fresh water anyway. Grumpy

So far I've only run in shallow water with mine about a foot deep. I worked fine but in fresh water I would avoid the Beach Mode or Saltwater setting from the update those are for salt water situations as Nicebdog indicated. I noticed no difference in one foot of water compared to working the beach. I was running either GC or FC and switching between the two with Combined tones and switching between open and heavy disc screens.

G.T.D. who's written a book on the CTX and I think was a tester has some blog's on the minelab site. He recommends letting the machine adjust to the water temperature first prior to hunting. So far he's doing real well in the salt water in Florida.

I thought the coil sliced through the water real easy in my limited water hunting. I haven't got the courage up to fully submerse the housing yet:sad:

I think I'm starting to see the light here. I need to get out of beach mode. I'll try combined mode and maybe a some doscirimination. Thanks very much, guys!

I have no problems with mine on the beach or in the water running Beach mode. I am surprised so many recommend not to use it.
Any chance you have a leak in your coil?
Did you tightening your fittings enough?
Just some ideas to check.

I agree, check your scuff make sure it doesn't have anything in there. That's usually causes misreads and is an easy fix.

Hi Guys
Does the Salt Water Download for the CTX make any difference to the responce to small link gold chains etc.

It is mainly to stabilize the machine.

Hey Bart
Thanks for the responce.I have'nt seen a direct comparrison between the Blisstool and the CTX regarding micro gold signals.Do you think its just a case of a future download mod from Minelab.

During water season I hunt just fresh water and if on vaccation beach. In fresh water it is a great machine, my hunting buddy has an excal and a CTX for land and he is planning on using the CTX this water season. I run almost wide open screen all but last few lines. I keep p2 open screen, combined same sounds as land, ferrous coin almost max sens or auto +3 depending on where I am and gain maxed out. This works well for me so my advice is create several programs with different settings and see what works in your area. Also I find here whenever I hunt in the lakes I remove the coil cover and wash it out good. 1 cause of nasty lake water 2 cause the sand build up can cause flasing and choppy sound. This is what worked for me good luck and HH
