I must admit, Minelab's PR campaign and the results posted from testers like Digger and others got me ga-ga over the CTX. I purchased one from a forum sponsor and commenced to hitting over places I have pounded with the E-trac and 3 different coils (8x6 SEF, 11" Pro, Detech Ultimate 13"). I set up the CTX in Combine mode, as the ground is riddled with iron. After forty hours of hitting the pounded park almost exclusively, I was blown away at the finds I dug with the CTX. I pulled several odds and ends, four silver dimes, two Indians, several wheats, several Civil War bullets (including 4 shot revolver rounds in the same hole), and a 10kt gold men's wedding band. I guarantee that I swept over the silvers, gold ring, and pile-o-4 bullets before with the E-Trac.
Now that I am getting accustomed to Chloe (that's her name) I am playing around more with conductivity tones and with the Geohunt feature. I tell ya, the Geohunt feature has changed the way I hunt for the better. It is extremely useful at my big hayfield Civil War sites to ensure that I make each swing count over fresh dirt.
Some observations: The CO numbers seem to be about 1 number or so lower in ground than E-Trac numbers. For example, the Indians I dug were coming in at 12-33/34. One Merc I dug was coming in at 12-43 at a park where they typically ring in at 12-45 on the E-Trac.
Also, the CTX doesn't replace the tried and true "low and slow" method of FBS hunting. It does test faster than the E-Trac, but I will continue the slow and steady sweep speed to ensure the goodies register. The depth seems the same as the E-Trac, but both the audio response and TID responses are way more solid on deep targets. Others have mentioned that "iffy" sounding targets on the CTX are usually junk. I can confirm this from my experience. In fact, I stopped digging iffy tones and, consequently, have stopped digging iron.
Please enjoy the attached video. I am loving this machine, and love how it has made my "old" sites into "new" sites!
