I was out last week and found this really cool button. I think its from the war of 1812...and help would be appreciated. Not sure of the backmark as I didnt clean if full yet. I also found a large cent (1843) and a civil war general service button (Scovill Mf Co backmark)

Jim I would be better able to identify it if you give me the exact coordinates of where you found it hahaha

That button is a beauty! I believe it is c1812-1830 Naval button
It probably is a gilt button, although the gilt may be hidden below the outer surface layer. If so, be really careful as to how you clean it, as you could wipe off the gilt layer.
I seemed to recall people using aluminum jelly or scrubbing bubbles.
Hopefully, other members will provide more info, or do a good search on the button type, and if gilt, search the cleaning methods.

Nice recovery. Not sure it is 1812, however. Could it be a G161_?

General service or militia button, eagle facing right beside shield, 16 stars, one part flat, Imperial Standard, (22mm)
Button depicts a patriotic eagle, and could be purchased by any militia units in the1830's and 1840's. This pattern features eagle facing right beside a shield, 16 stars, wide oval inner border, outer rope border. Backmark: "IMPERIAL / (star) STANDARD (star)", rmdc, stippled channel, backmark was a trademark denoting quality, and was probably manufactured in England, (Imperial01). One part flat button, coat size.
Ref: Albert GI61A.

I agree with this guy.....it looks just like one I dug, a 1920s Navy button. Very awesome find by the way!!
I included a picture of mine for comparison.

Thats a sweet button and was happy to see you pull that one out of the dirt. We have to get back to that spot. Theres more hiding in them there hills. LOL.
