CTX coin depths?

New member
Checked out the CTX at 2 sites that I've hammered with everything I had, including an Explorer SE with the 12X15 'Butterfly' coil (I 'skipped' the eTrac.). Had pulled up many coins at 6-8 inches, so figured there must be a couple still there.
// Been using the CTX 'coin' program, in High Trash, 4-tone COND. The CTX is great at pulling stuff out from among trash/in mineralized soil (gotten 2 silver, tiny gold cross, and an Indian), but so far the deepest coins I've gotten are at ~5 inches. I'm getting used to the CTX, and have ~12 hours on it so far. My hearing is what I rely on most, and it is still very good. (Sound first, image second is my detecting pattern.) Maybe I just did a great job pulling up all the deep ones?
Any experiences under the same conditions...going over your own hammered sites? Thoughts, different settings? Coin depths with good signals, scratchy signals? Maybe I already need Minelab's mega-coil? Thanks.

I think the rock hard moisture less soil is hurting the depth right now. I do not own or use the CTX, but I've noticed a little less depth on my E-Trac lately. Would assume the same affect on the CTX users as well.

I find the setting "Ground Coin" to do better in my soil for depth and "Ferrrous Coin" works better for me among all the bear caps and nails in the parks I hunt.

Got to get your coil over a deep coin it well come as far as dry ground no problem. This detector hits hard on all coins my soil is bone dry and still gets the deepies its really hard to miss a coin with this.If your in a trashy spot slow down your swing it will pick them right out.

If your ground is iron mineralized (mine is somewhat) you might try ferrous coin (seems to stabilize VID numbers and stop the bouncing). I think ferrous coin actually works much better in lightly mineralized soil than high trash as when I compare signals, high trash often (not always) is bouncing all over. Maybe it's from the iron in the ground and not the mineralization. My point anyway, is just to experiment.

If the mineralization is higher then as others said, I'd try ground coin.

I would try searching in high trash, ferrous coin and ground coin equally, until you get a deeper target. THEN start comparing the settings and see which one is best. And also compare 50 CO to Combine, etc.

We don't really know what this machine can do and the instructions haven't revealed anything groundbreaking to our search (which seems typical of ALL manufacturers, probably due to all the variables).
This is a fun time ;-)

sube is right on. When the CTX coil goes over a deep coin you will hear it. I have been finding shallow coins in areas I know my E-Trac has been over. I am not sure why but that has been the case. Coins in the 10+ have shown up also not many but I have gotten a lot more confident in this machine. We need rain bad here in TN. so the ground can soften up and I can dig in the parks. Nickles and IHs have been showing up in places that have been pounded along with some silver. Once you get the shallow targets out try going back over the same area and you may very well find some deeper targets. I have been running in auto +3 gain 28 ferrous coin with combined tones and have been pleased. HH :minelab:

I had the same experience on a site that I hammered over and over with my E-Trac and found several silvers. Got just one silver with the CTX there.
