I have had the CTX for close to 6 years. Yesterday as I detected on several properties each time I set the machine down there was a continuous obnoxious noise. The numbers on the display screen pretty much stayed them the same so it wasn’t falsing. I kept noise cancelling to no avail. This happened as well as I was Gridding and as mentioned I was on mutilple properties. I noticed this once before but thought it to be EMI. I was using the stock coil and checked everthing I could think of so I am hopeful one of you may have a clue. Although a 61 year ol gal I am a marathon detectorist so I may have finnally wore the machine out. I guess if there is any good news I just recently received my NOX 800. Thank you in sdvance for your thoughts!

If you tried the connectors and everything else try a factory reset.

Maybe the rechargeable batteries ? When they start to go they seem charged but have little power . Machine will make strange noises .

That's very odd. I haven't experienced obnoxious noise unless there was EMI (especially interference from a close-by detector) or water got into the control unit. Did you submerge your machine immediately prior to it acting up? Were there other Minelab machines nearby? I find the Explorers to be the worst at making the CTX go bonkers.

This doesn't seem like your problem but just to pass it on, I would occasionally notice a noise like EMI but wasn't close to any know cause. Finally I figured it out. I was digging shell fragments and putting them and other pieces of iron in my pouch. As my pouch got full the noise got worse. My CTX was picking up the iRon in my pouch bouncing around. I emptied my pouch and the noise went away.

Ok,I don’t want to state the obvious but you know what the threshold is and it isn’t that? Or it got turned up accidentally or the tone changed for it or both?
I had terrible EMI areas for about a mile around a faulty transformer on a power pole until they replaced it after like a year because it finally died. Had I not known the guy who did the work on it, I'd have never known, but I thought it was a faulty detector too for awhile because it was doing it on multiple properties.... All within a predictable distance of that transformer.

If you are setting the coil down and the shaft is more or less parallel to the coil, you may be putting stress on the wire-coil connector on top of the coil and indicating a possible short. Shorts at this location on the coil could also manifest themselves when, for example, you hit something along the coil glide path. If it keeps up try replacing the coil and see if this fixes the problem. Personally, I love the 17" coil for dry beach and surf hunting.
I went on a club hunt yesterday and my WM 10 wouldn't connect, I was getting strange noises. I tried every channel and couldn't connect and the noise wouldn't stop. It turned out to be a short in my head phones. I had an extra pair of head phones, put them on and the WM 10 connected and the noise stopped.I hope you solve your problem. By the way, my CTX is the same age as yours, I am a little older then you are,and a little slower, you can add that to the equation LOL
