CTX 3030 Wear Preventitives

My buddy Roland is a top pro hunter who uses the CTX pretty well every day. Here are some of his mods to reduce wear.
1/ He is a fanner so he wanted to reduce the flexion of the h/p cable when the machine was put down aft while working beside the coil. He begins with rubberized tape going from the cable down to the hardware. he then puts a bead of Locktite then goes back up the the cable. He then repeats this with electrical tape to protect the softer stretch tape from being nicked. He also uses electrical tape to seal the bat pod crack from grit.
2/ He had a leaker coil so now he seals the pigtail / hardware with a rubberized tape undercoat and then as with the phone jack a final layer of electrical tape.
Rather than remove the coil cover every day he has used zip ties to reduce the amount of room there is for sand to get in-between the coil and the cover.
The USB jack is also shimmed to make the (aftermarket) o-ring sit round instead of flat on one side. the USB housing is then covered with "Co-Ax-Seal".

Heheh...."How to Use Your Metal Detector"(forgot exact title but I was reading my autographed copy from Bill Lahr last night.) It doesn't have much to do with CTX maintenance but I just realized who the OP is. Thanks for your contribution Clive, that book illustrates that MOST everything that pertained back then pertains now.

What is going on there with the headphones cable? Is it a small adapter cable?
Did he do any mod to the bottom shaft itself as it has a hard edge that can wear through the coil cable. I put a length of spiral plastic sold for organizing car stereo wiring.

Ya, that was actually the first thing he did--tape the cable and use a section of sheathing on the sharp edge. I posted it a few months back.

Bill's forgotten more than most will ever know! Ive been very luck to be able to fire a few questions at him from time to time--and a real honor to publish his book.

I wonder if we just aren't better off gluing the coil cover on with silicone and be done with it until it wears out.
The nylon zipties are ok but still let sand get in the gaps I'd have to take care to wash out so sand doesn't get in the house when I bring it inside.

Those 17" covers leave much to be desired...... cannot imagine that thing in the water.

I have a Mil-Spec cover, with the area at display cut out.

A neoprene double barrel shotgun cover for upper & lower shafts. Protectors neoprene cover on the rear.

Handle has been wrapped in 3m Super 88 almost all of it's life.

LOVE IT !!
