CTX 3030 Rejecting Pennies

New member
Yes, or no? I'm hunting So Cal beaches, there's ton's of pennies. I've been notching out 12.36 and passing them by. I've read that some have found fat gold rings around that number.

Ive found gold......... large gold rings. Picked one up one time that was passed up among several pennies that i took the time to dig. Showed it later to a guy i was hunting with who was using a CTX just in front of me and he said he passed um up. I dont pass anything except IRON and a shallow bottle cap.

Dig everything that doesn't grunt iron and I even dig some iron targets. I will pass up zincs if I don't have much time or if the beach is loaded with people detecting. If I have no competition where I'm detecting I'll dig them.

I sent you a message too.

I remember one of the bigger gold rings I got with the CTX rang in at 12/37. I think I had another one at 12/35.

Ground mineralization can mess with and shift the ID on things so I dig everything in the zinc range.

Some bottle caps come in around 1/12-15 and every time I dig one of these it's a cap. On the other hand 1/36-43 can be a big fat silver dollar.

In some of the areas I hunt ground mineralization (black sand) is so bad the iron number on most coin targets is unreliable. I'll get 1/30's to 40's on pennies through dimes. I've dug these so I know when I'm in these type of areas I go by the conductivity number and the bounce.

Yep, some rings are right at the penny TID - not much choice but to dig 'em. If you're short on time or energy skip them ... chances are better than even a penny signal is actually a penny, perhaps 1-2% of the time is it something other, something valuable. Probability wise, using your time not digging pennies may increase the odds by covering more ground and thereby finding something valuable (switching away from pennies to covering ground may increase your odds of recovery).

I wouldn't. Best mans gold ring with diamonds I h e found came in at 12-36. Solid. I even thought "oh goodie another freaking penny"then BAM! There it was in my scoop.

Dig it all is what I glean from this thread. I like Randy's idea of notching only if there's a lot of competition, or if you have limited time.
