Went out to a new field this evening. Wasn't too large, mostly consisted of a hilltop. Started picking up a lot of old house trash. Everything from flat buttons to twisted, mashed cans. The closer I got to the hilltop, the more trash there was. Definitely an old house sat up there at one time. I didn't have my small coil with me, so I moved away from the solid blanket of trash to where the backyard might have been. Was disappointed in the number of mangled cans, old as well as cans from this century. They were giving real good signals, but disappointing to dig.

Then I got another good "can" reading, VDI 85. Cut a plug, turned it over, and said to myself "Rats, another can... hmmm, this one looks like its got an eagle on it... that ain't no can, that's a bent Civil War belt plate!"

After taking a picture of it in the ground, I pulled it out and examined it. Hit by a plow and nearly bent into a U shape, but it is all there; even the attachments on the back are intact.

Here it is with most of the dirt washed off of it. Not exactly drop dead gorgeous, but I'll sure take it. I'm going to send it off to one of those guys that repairs Civil War artifacts, and have him straighten it. I know if I try to straighten it it'll crack, and I don't want to use a torch on it. I'll let the professional do it. Bottom picture is back of plate with the attachment hooks.

Thanks for looking y'all :hot:
