Yesterday Sarah, my 12 year old daughter and I, went to detect an old home site. The house stood until the early 1900's, and saw some encampments from both Confederate and Union forces during the war. I have been there several times and have made some interesting finds. My first good dig of the day was this Civil War knap sack hook, a fairly common find in encampments or along troop movements. But I'm always happy to see one.

Amongst digging the numerous pieces of twisted metal, broken brass things, door hinges etc., a good item does turn up occasionally. Although this old pocket watch will never tell the time again, it was carried and used daily by a soldier or farmer long ago.

Sarah and I both added to the coffers of the iron stump. This picture doens't do it justice, as there is about 2 foot of iron under what you're looking at, down in a hole. I have personally thrown approx. 12 ax heads in here, all found on one side of where the house once stood.

This is Sarah detecting the house site. Actually, I was ready to go, pretty much worn out. But she was saying "One more signal Dad, I've got one more good signal." So while I was waiting for her, I did manage to find our only Civil War bullet today at 12". Took me near 5 minutes to hack my way down to it.

Here's our finds for the day. Not a pretty sight. Sarah and I both found one of these funny looking copper bowls that something screws onto the top. Mine was bent. She also found a couple buckles. Said she had a good time, wants to know when she can go again.

This one had me going for a minute. When I dug it, it was covered in dirt. I rubbed some off. I could see a big number, and then "E" Company; but after more rubbing, it wasn't what I thought it was. Reads B.S.E. Co. Maybe an old cow tag or something. Thanks for looking y'all.
