:csflag: She ain't pretty but it's a Civil War U.S. box plate....

Last week, Mountain Man took me to a large farm on Lee's retreat route to Appomattox. He said he was going to introduce me to the owner and it would be a new place for me to hunt. A day or two later I went and dug these 11 bullets and friction primer, and this afternoon, daughter number 2 Leanna and I went back and got permission on another farm in the area.

The new farm has pasture down to a river; Leanna and I started detecting parallel to each other along the course of the river, and wasn't finding much. Generally pretty quiet. Oh, there was an occasional shotgun brass or modern bullet, but nothing else too indicate that there had been any Civil War activity here. After about a quarter mile of parallelling the river, I told Lee we should go up on a knoll that was close to the river. Once we got there I found a musket ball, Lee found a flat button, and I got in an area of quite a bit of iron and got a good signal between the chatter. Pulled up a dirt-encrusted clod and thought I had part of an old can, but as I wiped away the dirt I could see lead with rust running through it and I knew I was looking at the back of a plate... well... at least what's left of the plate. Turning it over and wiping the dirt off I could see the "U" and eventually the "S". This is actually my first US plate which I have been envisioning finding for many years. In my mind it was always in better shape than this one but I'll still take it. You know what I always say... beats plucking your eyeball out and eating it.

Here is a photo of it after I had cleaned it when I got home. I tried heating it up with a hair dryer and bending it straight but it started cracking, so it is what it is.

Here's a shot of the back. Picture below is Leanna right after she found her flat button. Thanks for looking.
