:csflag: Scouting mission and some bull...

Today was a scouting mission to see if the upper pasture, which is a long ways from the road, has any Civil War relics. This is the second time I've been up there. The first time I searched the area waaaaay over on the other side. Today I searched the area on this side. Look at the size of that field, its so big you can see the curvature of the Earth  (click on pictures to enlarge). Mission report is: no encampment. I found 2 pocket knives, a couple pieces of unidentified brass, a thimble. I'm pretty much going to cross this pasture off.

On my way to that pasture and back from it, I did manage a few bullets and this Civil War brass curb chain, goes under the horse's chin on a bridle.

Here's the digs for the day. The teeniest thing is a percussion cap for a .44 revolver; I think this is the first revolver cap I've found. There's some Spencer casings and a couple other whatnots.

Had a couple problems with my pin pointer... first problem was I left it home. And I knew my daughter's pin pointer was also at the house. I discovered this after I had walked about 150 yards and was digging my first signal, couldn't find the target, reached for the pin pointer and it wasn't there. This was like panic time. Detecting without a pin pointer to me is like hopping on one leg. I finally managed after scooping up handfuls of dirt, discovered the target was a piece of buckshot. I walked back to the truck... now remember its 100 degrees... and luckily there was a spare pin pointer in my accessory bag.

Then after I had scouted the upper pasture, I walked the 3/4 mile back to the first pasture where I got a signal on the curb chain... reached for my pin pointer (my pouches were overstuffed with diet Mountain Dew), realized it had fallen out, and this was the first target I had dug since I left the upper hilltop 20 min. ago. Anyway, I turned to retrace my steps and hopefully find it not far away. When I turned, the bull was there grazing. OK, let me ask you something... what's the chances of that pin pointer being directly under that bull? Of course it wouldn't be. I circled around the bull and walked the 3/4 mile to the upper hilltop, retracing my steps. Searched all around the high ground looking for my pin pointer, couldn't find it. An hour later I worked my way back where the bull had been eating, and guess what was right there, just 30 feet from where I first noticed it was missing?... right, my pin pointer! Who'da thunk it? :ranting:
