:csflag: Scouting a new site...

Just got permission to detect on some land along Lee's retreat route. I got there at 9 am for a preliminary look see. It was already too hot. Hundreds of gnats swarmed around my head, and I swear I inhaled one every 3 breaths. I made one pass down the field about 30 feet from the road. The area was covered in "can slaw" and the ground was so hard and dry, I was not going to dig shallow signals. Once I got across the field, I started heading to the back of the property where I was told some old gravesites were. It was nearly a half mile walk through high grass where I jumped a big ol' ground hog and a red fox.. Finally came upon 2 old barns, I'm guessing turn of the century. Found a big turkey tail feather for Katie here.

There was lots of old equipment grown over with brush and trees. Don't know what this was, but the front and rear axel are still in place. The wood between them had long rotted away.

Continued walking further back and came upon this pasture. Found the old stone foundation of a building in it. Was hoping this was going to be an untouched Confederate camp site. (Ed, I just finished that book "Yeah, in your Dreams".)

Here's a picture of the stone foundation. There were other foundation stones scattered around the field along with an occasional hand made red brick. I found some period pieces of brass, half of a round brass container that says something on it I can't make out. At this point, I turned off the detector and did a little scouting. Didn't go back far enough to find the grave site, I'll wait till cooler weather and rain.

I came upon what looked like an old road through the woods at one time leading up to the hilltop. Huge trees were now growing in it. Ironically I found the rotting remains of seven cows in this area in different fazes of decomposition. I had noticed when I first got to the barns that there was a large number of crows and buzzards in the nearby trees.... Now I know why.

I never made it back to the end of the property, which the guy told me would be the second creek I came to. The only thing I did find of interest to me was this fired .58 caliber miniball... proof of my hypothesis that there was a untouched Confederate encampment here  ... Oh, and five ticks I found on me when I got home were of interest to me also. :look:

When he mows his yard he'll stick a Dryer towel sheet out of the back of his cap, like a "Bounce" type of sheet. He'll wear it kind of like a neck shade. He supposedly read somewhere where it will repell the gnats. I was born in Fl. so they really don't bother me bad enough to try it. If you give it a try, let us know if it's the real deal or just a wives tale.
Inquiring minds want to know.
