Yesterday when I was told by my family that we had to go to the pet store and get a dozen frozen mice for my daughter's four foot corn snake we've had for four years, I was ho humming. But one never knows what will happen. As we left the pet shop and was driving down the highway when I noticed what looked like a large field just the other side of the railroad tracks. So I turned in to investigate... sure enough it was a field, and had recently been cut. I pulled into the guy's driveway and was given permission to detect. I knew that Yankee cavalry had camped in this area, and if these fields were fields during the Civil War, there was a good chance they held relics.

This morning I arrived and started detecting. The field turned out to be more of a cut meadow than a hay field or pasture, and stiff stubble rose 6-8" above the ground, so that's the height I was swinging. Started off finding a few shotgun brass and modern bullets as I worked my way towards a small rise. Once I got to the rise I hit this Civil War .44 caliber pistol bullet.

Then I started finding Sharps, Spencers and Burnsides, all signs of Yankee cavalry.

Found two Spencer casings, this one still has the powder in it and is topped off with a hunk of lead across the top. Also found a half dozen Spencer bottoms (the side casing eaten away).

Found no buttons but I know that they're there and I'll guarantee you that this pasture has US plates in it. And I'm going to find my first US plate from this location. I found what is shown here in approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, most of it was within a 20 foot radius of the first .44 pistol bullet. By 11:30 it was already too hot, and I grudgingly headed for the van. They'll be there another day.

Here's the bullets cleaned up, thanks for looking y'all.
