Yesterday we went to a large pasture, and on the hill top once stood a Civil War period house. Dave and I searched the surrounding fields while Dave's wife Nancy patiently searched through the debris where the house once stood. At least part of it had been burnt down; there were no electrical lines or any modern conveniences in this house, but you would occasionally find copper gas lines for indoor lighting and other clues to indicate that the house was in use untill the late 1800's

In the picture above, Nancy is sorting through the multitude of targets at the house site, trying to find some history to save.

In this picture, Nancy has nervously stood up and is asking us to please save her, as all of the cows in the pasture seem to have taken a liking to her.

She was not interrupted, however, before she found this very old gold ruby ring. Its heavily encrusted with something that was very difficult to get off, but after about an hour of hard scrubbing, the gold shone through on most of the ring. There were numbers and cursive writing on the small band, but we were unable to make out what it said.

Some more of the cows showed up, wanting to see the ring as well.

Here is a shot of our combined finds for the afternoon. Nancy's ring is wrapped around a Civil War pistol bullet. There's a small jews harp, some rivets off of CW belts, and a few bullets. I will try to catch up on today's detecting adventure tomorrow... while we're having another adventure. Dave and Vernon, out.
