:csflag: Civil War campfire site gives up some relics....

Today looks like the last cool day for a while, about 90*. The next five days they're calling mid to high 90's. So I thought I would take this last opportunity to go out detecting before I'm shut down for a week. Wandered around in the cut meadow for about an hour. Yellowish leaves at the top are poison ivy. Greenish little bush at the bottom is poison sumac. Careful where you dig, its everywhere. Only found 2 bullets in the field, so I went to the pasture. You can click on all the pictures to enlarge.

Detected around for about 20 minutes then hit a little spot that was giving up some relics. Four whole spencers . Whole spencers are selling on the Internet for about $50 in good dug condition. I know have about 28 of them.

Three showers came through while I was detecting. I took shelter under a big oak tree, luckily they were only about ten minutes long. Took this picture of my covered detector while I was waiting for it to stop raining. You can't see the rain in the picture, but it is raining.

Then back out for some more digging, and more whole spencers... somebody stop me!

OK, here's one for you. The ground is bone dry with the consistency of about half clay half hardened concrete. I'm digging a bullet, pulling some dirt out with my hand, and this nasty looking varmit runs out of the hole. He could not have moved in that ground, he must have been in some sort of tunnel. He's bigger than he looks, he would cover a quarter. Very black and very shiny, almost looked like one of those shiny play spiders made out of rubber. I poked at him with a stick, and he starts shaking his head and spewing out this grayish-greenish slime! ... well'sir, that was the last thing he ever did. YUCK!

Digs for the day. I was able to match a spencer bullet with a good case and ended up with five whole spencers; some melted camp lead, obviously bullets; pocket knife, fired spencer casings, and the top thing I think might be a steel tent peg. Wish you were there Mountain Man. Thanks for looking y'all.
