This is the first of two posts about detecting this year. Last February, Mountain Man and I hit an untouched house-site that turned up three of these Confederate Staff Officer's coat buttons. I was lucky enough to find one, as well as Mountain Man nailing his own "Droop Wing Eagle". It was a good (if not cold and windy) day. Click on photos to enlarge.

Searching within three feet of a road used by General Lee's army on his retreat to Appomattox, I recovered a handful of bullets, friction primers, and this Confederate lined I button (Infantry). Being so close to the road, it was in with a bunch of roadside trash, but the small coil did its job.

Searching in a field, I dug one half of an 1840's militia plate. 15 min. later, I recovered the other half 9 feet away. Bingo!

Searching another old period house site I got into a bunch of deep cans. Dug about 10 before this "can" popped up... an 1850's US militia belt plate. It was bent pretty bad but I had it straightened, the guy did a great job.

I found an untouched Union cavalry camp; over the next couple of weeks, Mountain Man and I pulled out nearly 500 bullets. This picture is just a portion of what I have taken out of that site so far. Mountain Man found a Confederate manuscript "I" button, and my 13 year old daughter found 9 whole Spencer bullets by herself.
