i had a great day out today until my excal broke.
i was beach hunting dry/wet sand ( no water ) when it started making funny sounds so i turned the senc down- still squealing played with the discrim nothing changed then touched the thresh hold & it went haywire so i try ed to turn it down made it worse i try ed to turn it off but it wouldn't the knob just turned round & round  i think i stuffed it  then it went deathly quite :surrender:.
i"d say my thresh hold switch is stuffed has anyone had this happen to there excal if so how much will it cost to fix ???

Mate,

still sounds like its your battery going flat.
Mine, Ive got 2 batteries, do similar when they're dying. One will go for ages once the death squeal begins but the other one once it squeals a couple of times the threshold tone goes crazy and I have to turn it off.
As for the buggered knob, theres been plenty of posts in the past about that problem.
Go back through the pages and you will find them. I believe its easy to fix but if no joy then send the machine to Minelabs in SA.
Ring the Melb Miners Den 9873 1244, they'll tell you the address and who to talk to.
Good luck, hope its only minor.

Lou.

Hello mate!

My 1st guess would be the death squeal, when the nicad takes a charge dive, but you stated that the threshold knob spins, "round & round". I had a faliure on my 1000 one time, but of course had to send the unit into Vegas for repair. The cost $0, as I have warranty on my units. If yer gunna water hunt, buy new so you have warranty, I have no idea how much it is going to cost, I would check with whoever does the repairs down unda! Good luck!

If you do send it in to Minelab, let us know how you go!

no need to cry just yet!! First, re-charge that battery. If it won't hold a charge, you might need to do a re-build on it. You can find the packs on e-bay, just sarch for Minelab, not sure if they ship to Oz. Next, pop the little yellow cap off of the Thresh knob. There is a little nut under there you can tighten the knob up with. Be careful not to over tighten as they will explode on ya!! While your at it, tighten all the rest of them too. I'll bet that gets you back on the beach again!!

I just sent Excal II to Vegas for repair of a bad solder joint on the threshold switch. My repair was under warranty. I was pleased with the turnaround time, they estimated 2 1/2 weeks to repair not counting ship times but they repaired it in 1 week and it's on the way home. They were great folks to deal with in my opinion.

had a play with it yesterday & the switch is stuffed the internal part is turning right round but with a bit of carefully playing ( 5 min worth ) i was able to get it running spot on :clapping:.
thanks for the advice all she"ll have to go back to minelab at some stage ( when i find enough $$$ detecting to fix it ).
