About a week or two ago, I re-secured permission to hunt a 1780's Bed and Breakfast property that had yielded some really nice finds in the past. One of them was the best large cent I have ever dug to date. It was an 1814 Coronet Head in unbelievable condition that I sold on the big E last year for $200.00. The buyer turned around and immediately re-listed it for $300.00 so that gives you some kind of idea. We also found numerous buttons, buckles etc. Anyway, when I went with the Etrac a couple weeks ago, I encountered the WORST EMI type interference I have ever experienced. This wasn't any ordinary power line electrical interference. This was like major short wave or micro wave type I think. It was so bad, even with the smallest coil (a 6"Detech) and lowest sensitivity, it was still unusable. So today, I go back with the Sovereign hoping for different results but it was the exact same thing. Even on the lowest sensitivity and smaller coil (the CoinSearch which I was running full hot yesterday!) What a shame to get permission to do such an awesome place and my detector rendered useless! I would get maybe a minute or three of peace and then at least 15-30 seconds of the worst chatter you have ever experienced. Has anyone else had this happen to them? The owner said he has even had his own TV scramble once in a while. Could this be Ham Radio or Shortwave Radio type interference? With the Etrac, even multiple noise cancels didn't get rid of it. Anybody?

Happened to me once on a 3 day hunt in farm fields day 1 was fine we all found some good targets , day 2 was a disaster EMI all day on most detectors then we found out there was a mico wave dish tower over the tree line run by the military it must of been on all day , day 3 no problems . Got to look for those . HH Jim

No electric fense in the area is there? I hunted a couple of parks like that..... oddly it changed with the season. In the winter i didnt notice it at all.

Any type of radio transmission can cause problems. Amateur Radio, CB Radio, Microwave, especially if they are running a high wattage transmitter. I don't know but I suspect that a cell phone tower in close proximity could cause problems.

With the etrac a good idea would be to try each noise band seperately, adjusting the noise cancel manually instead of just hitting the noise cancel button. I know its supposed to select the best band but sometimes it doesnt.

On the Sov sometimes disc can help and you already tried lowest sens.

Maybe its the box and not the coil, does it have the internal shielding? the earliest XS models didnt have it if I remember right.

Ive hunted difficult sites, one beach I hunt has power lines running directly over it so you have to hunt right under humming wires but thats the worst Ive seen and lowered sens has always worked for me on that beach.

Since youve got permission to hunt it maybe see if another detector might work there, if youve got another one or a friend does?

Sounds like a frustrating situation. best of luck resolving it.

Ditto. Im convinced late spring through mid fall when the electricity is on for the shelters and restrooms at the parks here, there are certain areas in the parks that will make most detectors go nuts. When they shut it down for the season, detecting these areas is no problem.

Did you try your smallest coil? As a general rule the smaller the coil the better it does in EMI and the higher you can set SENS before it get unstable. Not real original but sometimes the obvious get overlooked.
