CRUDDY BUTTON ID HELP.....

PULLTABBY

New member
Never fails ....... my first button and I'll probably never find out what it is or was. All I can make out is a definite IL with three lil * * * asterisk like markings . Nothing on front of button. Just a hair bigger than a dime, same thickness. On the edges it seems to be a gold flake(guilding ???) left on it ??? Most definitly copper
ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPREDCIATED

My unlucky guess would be from bib jeans

THANKS 4 LOOKIN

What you have is a "Colonial" button. Also referred to as a "coin" "flat" or "penny button." It predates the American Civil War; probably 1820-1840. It is civilian but many Confederates wore them on their coats and jackets. Backmark could be Scovil, one of the more prolific button makers from Waterbury, CT. Good find! David @ Dixie

David is right. I've found 45 of those over the last couple of months just out of one field. It's still a nice find.
