Crosshairs and Tones

Cody

New member
I don't use the crosshairs but prefer digital in conjunction with tones. For the crosshairs to be of much value there has to be some kind of averaging so they don't jump all over the place on hits. That causes them to lag the tones and digital reading from what I see. I kind of marked crosshairs off way back and go with digital and tones.

What I have found with digital and tones is there are places where fill dirt has been used to landscape, as an example, and where the original soil and fill soil meet there can be an area where the minerals are very different. It is almost as if there is a line drawn in the soil and at that point there is a high tone. However, it is mostly a problem if using manual sensitivity and it is set real high. In semi-auto we will pass over that area and hardly notice the change. If we go to pinpoint there is a noticeable difference in the soils at this point. I have never found anything other than just soil. I am not sure why we get a high tone other than tones are based on the time constant. The longest TC would be the highest pitch tone and the shortest TC the lowest pitch tone.

Other than that I have no answer for the crosshairs locked at 30/30 with a high pitch tone in ferrous.

Cody,

I assume you are using the EXP II.. and the digital screen.

If you were using the EXP XS.. with only one digital reading
would you still use the digital mostly?!

Could you.. or anyone that has used both the XS and II
give some advantages of the EXP II over the XS?... and..
if there are any.. disadvantages?

I'm going into retirement soon.. and could possibly swing
an upgrade at this point... seems I came to the conclusion
a while back that.. yes.. the EXP II is better, but, not enough
to justify the price difference... at this point the price difference
for me is not the consideration... if there is enough of an advantage...
I would consider an upgrade.. regardless of price (well.. sorta)....

Thanks,
Dan

I have used all of the Explorers and used digital on the XS. If the cross hairs were "real time" they would be useless as they would jump all over the place. We see a similar situation when the digital numbers change so fast we cannot tell what they are. I still prefer digital number and or tones. Tones first and then digital numbers to verify what I am hearing.

I prefer the EX2 to the XS but not because there is a difference in depth etc. I like to see Ferrous/Conductive/Size digital indications. I think the lower shaft on the XS is better than the one that is used on the EX2 but again these are personal preferences. I have a tendency to want the latest technology as I enjoy playing with the features. This adds an extra dimension to the detecting that is enjoyable to me. I have no interest in an XS unless I still had one. I would not purchase an XS if I could afford an EX2. When I retired in 2000 I purchased a good 20 detectors over a two year period of time since I would be able to devote a lot of time to detecting and wanted to catch up on what the top brands were doing. They all seemed to do a good job but being a tech type I settled on the EX2 and DFX. I don't think I have had the DFX out in about a year now.

Understood...

I believe the "learning" and the "hunt" is what keeps me interested..
if it became that we could go out to to an area, at any time, and only
find exactly what we were looking for.. everytime.. with little effort..
and as much of it as we wanted.. I believe I would become bored with it all..

Thanks for the info.

Dan
