Critter, I'm heading to the beach today to do some testing.

I hate wasting a perfectly good minus tide on testing but it will at least be documented what settings work best on mineralized beaches with the GT. I'm going to find some deep targets and compare signals using iron mask on, iron mask off, auto sensitivity, all metal pinpoint and different sensitivity settings on each target. I'll be using a video camera to record the testing so you can hear and see how each adjustment affects the target signal.

Interested to see how this works out myself. :minelab: Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Yea, that sounds great. Thanks for doing some testing to compare things. I'd also try Silent Search to see how that does on fringe targets. While your at it flip over to Silent Search and then bring the threshold back up to normal level to see if it seems to "boost" target signals for you. I'll try to remember doing these tests myself and post what I find. I've done some of them here and there but truth be known on deep "good" coin signals I tend to get excited and forget to take my time and check all these things out. Sure, I'll sit there and sweep at it all day long from different angles wasting my time doing that, but mainly because I like to really soak in how what I think might be a coin reacts at depth for comparison to deep junk targets or iron.

Also, a while back in the great PP VS Disc. debate somebody mentioned (might have been Neil?) that PP is easier to hear with the volume all the way up. I played with that and did find PP to go a bit deeper than with volume at it's lowest level like I like to hunt. Still, it did not go as deep for me on my GT in my soil, but it did improve it's depth. When I go to PP a deep target and can't hear it I've taken to cranking up the volume all the way and trying again. I'm finding it gives me a bit more depth to hear it. But, I'm still finding real deep targets in discriminate that PP can't hear, and when that happens I just PP in discriminate mode to find it. It's a little less percise than PP mode but it's pretty good. I've taken to using discriminate to PP even on shallow targets when the trash or iron in the ground is sounding off to PP and not allowing me to zero in on the target as well. I still prefer PP mode when possible to locate targets, though, more so since I've been using my remote PP switch.

I've got the 15x12 SEF on the GT also and use it mostly in the wet or dry sand. I have taken it about knee deep in the water but usually there's to much wave action here in MB which makes for to much drag on the coil..I'm what you might call a mossier,I work pretty slow and have found small rings fairly deep with the SEF. Compared to the 10" coil I think I get better depth and a clearer tone on deeper targets.

Thanks for that info. Do any land hunting with it for old coins and have you found it to be deeper in your soil than the 10" for them? If so, what kind of minerals do you have? I'm still trying to prove to myself it's deeper one way or another than my 10" in my high mineral ground.

I got the SEF specifically for beach hunting around the Myrtle Beach area since they re-furbished the beach a year ago. Since the finds have dropped off dramatically I figured maybe changing coils would give me alittle more advantage. It sure in the hell couldn't hurt since finding enough to get a beer and hot dog down the beach has gotten alot harder.Haven't done any land hunting with this coil so can't give any info on that subject...
