I have been tempted (Sorely, I might add) to leave Bryce's setting as described in Andy's book. But the truth is, I found only one coin using the stock settings. I changed it to Bryce's handy dandy patented coin killer setting and since then, I have found 8-10 coins at depths from 10 inches to a foot. Some are wheats, the first of that variety that I ever dug. Some few are newer but were lost in the 60's according to their dates. Bottom line is that it is a quick and easy way to start to find coins at respectable depths. If you are just getting started with an Explorer and need a better coin setting, check it out.
All hail Bryce!

Way to go, Chuck ! I`m also using those settings and the depth is amazing, got to be the higher gain ! Dug some really deep wheats today also. IH`s here I come ! Of course, finding the coins is all about where you are passing that coil over. ! But I did go to a place today that only had a small area between the sidealk and the street that I hunted back in December with my old machine and found zilch. Today 8 very deep wheats(8-10in.) and a 1948 washington quarter at about 6 inches. I LOVE this SE PRO.

I to was using the factory presets and did real good. Got Andy's book and put in Brice's setting and saw a big difference. Like his settings alot. Still haven't tried fast or deep on yet.

if you are using my settings...the gain is already jacked to the max setting of 10.

In my opinion...running high gain and Deep ON at the same time is actually counterproductive.

Why?...because it actually distorts the signal on an already "best combination" of depth, audio response, ID, and discrimination.

Deep on also causes a slower target signal and ID response.

Running gain maxed at 10 allows for amplified and "better" hearing of deeper and weaker target signals without compromising target ID and response.

I don't even run fast ON in the trash because I feel it chops the signal short...and I don't like it. I'm not telling you to not run fast on in the trash...just telling you that I don't...as well as the reason why.

I slow down to a near crawl in the trash anyway. I already creep when I hunt in clean ground...but in trash I'm an absolute rock pile . I don't even swing the coil... I stay in one spot and "scan" the ground.

Please read this link...seriously...and give it a little time. You will benefit greatly in the long run:

Thank you Chuck...much appreciated:cheers:

While my settings are simple and easy to use and program...I always recommend a new user stay in the factory presets for a few hunts to familiarize themselves with the machine.

After 1000's of hours on the explorers...To this day I still run the exact settings as printed in Andy's book (with the exception of a couple slight misprints as is explained in my field test post at the top of the page).

I have tried a zillion combinations...and always come right back to my exact settings. It just works well for me when searching for deep, masked silver and injuns'.

I will probably do as I am told and start out in the factory pre-set. But I have Bryce's settings saved in User A and Mike Moutray's in User B. Between those three I should be able to dial-in something that works for me..

And I am thinking that I should let my thumbnail on my right hand grow out a little so I can push those little buttons.....(my only peeve thus far with the Explorer)
