Covert trip to soon-to-be destroyed Drive In

Last night I spent about an hour working the playground area in the old Miles Rd. Drive In theater. The city of Cleveland just announced it will be torn down soon to make way for a housing project. It just happens to be right next door to the indoor baseball facility where my son works out. I dropped him off, and walked over.
The area of the playground is WAAAYYY overgrown, with grasses about 6-8" high. Anywhere the growth was matted down I got targets. The place opened in 1953, closed in 2000. After it turned dark, it got kinda creepy (also there are squatters living inside), so I left after barely an hour. I ended up with <$1.00 in clad, with the oldest a 1963 memorial penny. A 1970 quarter gave me hope that maybe there is no barrier to the "silver dimension" here, or else that dang quarter would have been a 1965!
Here's a few pics:

Try hunting the space between where the cars were parked. I hunted an old DI years ago just before demo and pulled out a lot of silver from that narrow patch between the cars. Also the closer you get to where the concession stand was the better. Take a bricklayers hammer with you to work through the gravel....good luck.

Heck, if you would have called me, I would have been there with you working that area. :) Great pics!

Thanks for the tip on the hammer/gravel. The concession stand is sep. from the projection booth. The entire lot with speaker stands is filled with waist high weeds. I will try it again for a bit this Thursday, when he has pitching workouts.

Our old drive inn was destroyed during hurrican Carla and never rebuilt. I worked that area about 20 years ago and pulled several silver dimes, quarters and franklins. Work it even if you have to get a lawnmower to cut that grass in the playground area. I couldn't work the rest of the area because of brush and tall grass, want to go back but that property is now owned by a Chemical company.....HH John

John...aren't you like in...Edmonton?
You aren't about to drive to Cleveland to work in covert ops are ya?

Hunt the ramps and around the booths and concession stand. You may come up with some nice coins and rings if the place hasn't been hunted to death.

Hey. Saw your post in the metal detecting forum that lead me here.... Anyway, my son(16) and I go detecting on a regular basis and live in North Olmsted. Let me know if or when you feel you need some help with this site. It's cool that you posted and hope the spot works out. I usually will not post my spots until I first feel that I have had sufficient time to initially "cherry pick" the area. Or if I feel that I will not have sufficient time to get to the spot and search it.

Bob,
I'll be there tonight for a bit rigt around 6:30ish, after dropping my son off nearby for his pitching workout. As far as letting people in on a spot, THIS spot will be gone completely very soon. Also, it's overgrown condition makes it hard to work.

Hey. Checked out the drive in today. Man, this site is not easy to search. The playground grass is so thick and high that when you get a 6" signal and dig it it's right on the surface! It was windy and cold so we didn't spend too much time here. I was getting a lot of twist off tops in the parking area. We went out front a little and found a wheat penny(1951) and some other clad. I don't know if we will go back. It's a bit of a drive and we have other hot spots to dig. I just posted our finds for today in the Quattro forum. Found my first Indian Head Penny!:bouncy:

Hey guys....next time you go, grab a 1/4 sheet of plywood, maybe 2 feet wide and 2 feet long....lay it down and swing over it...I have used this technique hunting in old home sites and it works great...Jack.

You still need to pack along a weed whacker to clear you some spots. If it hasn't been hunted before it will be a bonanza. I knew an older feller years ago that had a whole jewelers tray full of diamond rings he had pulled out of drive-in movies.

Jack, thats a great idea, I think I will cut a piece out today and keep in the truck, for when needed.

Thanks for the tip, and have great Sunday. Bernie
