Couple hunts with the Original.

The original seems to be hot on nickles. My first hunt I found 4 and one had so much crud it looked like a slug. After scraping off it was a 1925 plain.I did find a couple of wheat's,but this detector likes hot rocks never noticed this with the XS Sovereign. After installing a remote pin pointer switch on the handle this helped, but those hot rock targets sure sound a lot like deep silver and can be frustrating.Today's hunt I loaned my Classic lll to my older brother Gene and we hit a school and a park. The school produced lots of deep clad and my brother with the Classic lll found a 1961 Canadian silver dime.My brother wanted to go to this old park and explained there was an old boy scout camp next to the park.Anyway the park has real possibilities I found a 1946 Roosevelt Silver dime and a 1930 wheat cent, but the Original was picking up a lot of hot rocks.Today I used the Coinsearch coil for my next hunt the T800 will be used. After this hunt the unit seems to have the tone pitch set too high so I lowered it down to a mosquito pitch.I found the tone pot right away but I noticed another pot and a check revealed it was set to the max.I backed off the pot about a quarter turn which would equal 3/4 to max I'm hoping this will help with the hot rock appetite.Maybe tomorrow back to the park.

Ron, I've noticed the same thing. The original Sovereign and The GT are very similar in that they seem to be hotter in iron mask with more falsing on high minerals/hot rocks and iron than later models where iron mask was hard wired on. My original Sovereign and now GT when in iron mask hit on hot rocks much more than my Elite which is always in iron mask. The Elite was smoother with less falsing on ground minerals and rocks than either the Original or the GT. My GT with iron mask off runs much like the Elite with iron on which leads me to believe that Minelab may have watered down the sensitivity in iron mask or other internal adjustment in later models to keep them running smooth in more mineralized ground conditions.

Crazyman,I would have to agree with your observation. The GT I had did hit hot rocks but nothing close to the Original.Went for a short hunt today and found some deep clad dimes and yea those nice soft 180 tones all were hot rocks.
