Some fellow forum members asked that I keep them updated on my quest to dig 1000 old coins from this one particular city park. Today I dug three more during a short 2 hour hunt with Park Pirate. Today's 1880 Indian head cent, 1884 V-nickel (just missed the key date by one year !) and 1943-S war nickel bring my grand total to 996. Weather looks good tomorrow so I'm hoping to dig four more oldies to end this. It has taken 23 years, hundreds of 24 mile round trips, God knows how much gas and how many hours. First coin I dug there was a 1902 Indian head cent on April 9, 1988. Number 500 was a 1920 Buffalo nickel on August 7, 2002. Number 750 was a 1912 Barber dime on June 10, 2004. I'm guessing I also pulled somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500 - 2000 wheat cents out of there. Also in the picture is a nice 1897 V-nickel I dug yesterday in a different park.

Awesome coins. I am just amazed that you have dug nearly 3000 old coins (including wheaties) from ONE PARK. That is just incredible to think about. That is just an amazing amount of pre-1964 coins to pull from one park. Absolutely incredible!

Great job,

Steve

Good luck getting those last 2 silver coins. I just need two more oldies to get to my goal of 100 this year. I probably will only end up with about 20 silvers though. All thats left are indian head cents and nickels !!

Ed -- despite the size of the park, that's an unbelievable amount of coins in there. :surprised:

You say that only 20 or so of your oldies this year are silvers, but yet you are still closing in on 100 oldies...that's super impressive in and of itself, to me! Not counting wheats, almost ALL of my oldies are silvers. I am NOT good at finding other old coins. I have 3 Indian heads, and one old Canadian nickel, this year, and THAT'S IT -- that's the sum total of my "other" oldies this year (again, aside from wheats). So, for you to have roughly EIGHTY of those "other" oldies...I find that just SUPER impressive!

Very nice ed. I have to say, having pm'd u a while back; that is a difficult park to hunt...there are a lot of signals.....amazing job and interesting record keeping....u must be a virgo as u are so organized.

It sounds like wheats don't count? Your post makes me think of going through my records and do a tally for my favorite site.

There must be a ton of junk you are sifting thru to come up with that many oldies others just ignored or didnt find. Sounds like a SMALL park as well as compared to say some of the Indy parks that are huge. If you are pulling those kind of oldies out ... there has to be silver in that place. How many of those old nickels you found? Pulled any gold? good luck on your goal.

Park has been heavily detected for over 30 years. Most silver we find now is masked by iron or other nearby junk. I do dig alot of nickels and Indian head cents. Looking at my spreadsheet, I've pulled 173 buffalo nickels, 98 V nickels, 31 Jefferson war nickels and one lone shield nickel out of there. Indian head cents lead the way with a total of 436. Over 200 silver coins including 79 Barber coins. Funny you mention gold as I pulled a gold band today. I do get the occassional gold ring and a few years ago I dug a beautiful 1926 New York College for Teachers Class ring. I got a 1926 yearbook on eBay with the owners photo. I contacted the college and did get her married name. Was never able to track down anyone with that last name though. College asked if I would be interested in donating ring since they did not have that year in their archives. I still have it though.
