Could this be a Sabre end?

Grunter

I found this on the union side of the battlefield but I'm sure there was Cavalry action where this was found. It is 1 7/8" wide at its widest point. It is overall 5 1/2" long. It is beveled on the top side. About 1" from the widest end it took a heavy blow that broke it off. It appears to have some kind of plating on it. The picture that is out of focus shows it to be a hollow ground blade. Any ideas on whether its period correct? It was approx. 8" deep.

Did they ever make a hollow blade for any knife or sword? If anything I could see it being a drag but I would have expected it to be brass or other some other type of "ornamental" metal. Then again I am no expert.

I think you can rule out a sabre or drag and the plating is also suspicious for a serious weapon. I think you might be on the right track of ornamental or low grade knife
