Are you kidding? I don't mean that sarcastically, but if you honestly found that without knowing what it is you are one lucky fella. Its a bayonette, and a nice one. Without knowing the size and dimensions and the history of the area I couldn't tell the vintage but first impressions is civil war springfield. Great find! Yes it needs preservation. The best thing for it is electrolysis. If you don't know how to do that p.m. me and I will explain. If you don't want to do that soak it in a baking soda water solution for a few days, the hit with a brass brush, the spray polyurethane in a thick coat.
 
Well I new it was a bayonet but what era? We have Revolution era things here as well. Thanks for the tips on cleaning.IT measures a little over ten inches long.
