Could it be the yellow stuff?????? South Wales, UK

Welsh Neil

New member
Greetings from Sunny Cardiff.

I found this piece of curious metal recently near a 2000 year old Roman lead mine in South Wales (10 miles from the 3rd largest Roman military camp in the UK). About 6 inches down in a lunp of clay. The only cleaning it has undertaken is a quick wash under the tap. Wales does have a history of gold but that tends to be more West and North Wales.

Theres also the theory that where Romans mined lead they also mined gold. So who knows?

Its probably copper, but I guess someone out there will know. Thanks in advance for the help

Put a few drops of nitric acid on it,if it turns green and starts eating you have copper, brass,or even some old bronze mixtures will also turn green. With gold it just looks back at ya. No acid just call around as jewelers have test kits.Tons a au 2 u 2-John Please post results??

Could go either way. I doesn't look like any gold we get here in the states but it does have the shape of a copper nugget or slag. The color is a bit dull but that could be the alloy of copper or lead causing that. Let us know.
