hello tesoro users, hey just currious on the cortez on the people that have them how much they really like them, it just baffles me alot when i'm watching ebay you can pickup one these for around $450.00 and this is tesoro's flag ship machine and compitition wise say against like the m6 or mxt just would like any cortez owners opinion on there thoughts about it

I bought a new Cortes December of 2007, and have used it fairly often (2-3 times a week) throughout the year and continue to as I'm going today also. The only other detector I've used is a mid 1980's Whites 5000d, and to be honest is not a fair comparison either, the Tesoro has about 22 more years technology behind it not to mention its tiny and light as a feather next to the Whites. But anyway what really sold me on the Tesoro brand was the warranty and the price (new $679.00 from Cleavengers in Kansas city). When I first got it I started going to some older parks (1880's to present) in town that were picked over and pretty trashy and it seemed as if it was too sensitive, beeping on every single piece of trash no matter how I adjusted it, notched it, turned up the discrimination etc. I've since learned to keep discrimination low (at Iron) and use all descriptive outputs (tone, bar graph, readout) to determine to dig or not, being rewarded for the effort also (more digging = more finds). Occasionally I have also run into some electrical interference (voltages 440v, and buried lines) which really puts a damper on a prospective area, it still works fine but makes constant noise while detecting.
But all in all I have been pleased with the Cortes, it is a very good detector that has a learning curve as I think most do. I have never had anything broken or any repair nor warranty, its always worked, absolutely excellent battery life. I've read from other posts and brochures that all detectors have these same issues to varying degrees. Would I like to try other brands? yes. would I buy the Cortes again? yes. Your finds will depend on your research and how much time you invest in the hobby, What ever you buy, use it, learn it, listen to it, enjoy it.

Hey thanks for the input, just currious how deep was your deepest find? and would you say is it as deep as the tejon?

Someone else will have to chime in about the Tejon, I have zero knowledge on that machine. For the first question though its hard to say honestly and I'm not one to say some inflated figure like 9"- 10", I've never really measured a coins depth in the field, but a good estimate on my max depth in undisturbed soil would be probably around the 5" to 6" mark because thats when I usually give up thinking it may be a pipe or something, and its actually pretty good with gravel also. The vast majority of my finds are probably between 0"- 4".

Had my Cortes about 2 years now. I use it mostly in parks for coins and jewelry down to about 7 inches, sometimes on the beach dry sand. The meter is accurate on coins ID to 6 inches, as most detectiors are. Light weight. The knobs and switches make it a joy to use. It ID's in both modes, target depth too. I glance at the meter for every target, lets me not dig iron. I like it very much for the type of searching I do. Has a very fast response, can swing it fast or slow. The SUM mode sounds seem worthless because the meter numbers tell me all I need, the higher the numbers the higher the sound pitch when in SUM. Had to put the white label on the meter to make it easier to read, made it with MicroSoft Excel.

Jabbo, I like the label, good idea. I'll probably make me one also. I agree about the "sum" mode, I have tried it a few times but if a target warrants that much attention I already need to be digging it, I mean what does it take to kneel down and expose the target, 10 seconds?
Do you use the notch switch? I don't, I'm always afraid it will discriminate a ring or jewelry that falls within the notch window, yes, I dig pull tabs, pull rings, some screw caps and the occasional ring. Aluminum tax tokens fall in there somewhere also.
How much all metal hunting do you do? I've never got comfortable enough to stay with it, though I have experimented a little. I feel most confident in discriminate, turned down to iron.

I picked up a Cortes due to some of the post's at the time got me curious, and it would be my 1st Tesoro with a display. I wanted to check out the display and the sum mode - well the display and labels were to small for my below average eye sight, and I only tried the sum mode a couple times at first. Then I ended up afterward using it like other non-display Tesoro's, listen to the audio. I like Tesoro audio and had got away from using it's display. Others may use it and that's fine, but to be honest, I didn't really use the screen or sum mode after the first few times out with it. I keep telling myself to take my glasses and try, well I leave my glassed behind when swinging a detector.
But also in all fairness, I have used the Cortes the least compared to my other Tesoro's. If I recall correctly, I think I dug up a ring about 7 inches that picked it out no problem, a junk ring, but one I had missed before.
I don't really have any negatives against it, just my eyes would need assist cheaters (glasses) to try and make some use of the display, but not to totally rely on a display.
Hey it's a Tesoro - I think it's a fine machine - I still have it and have no plans on letting it go.

dmc, use Excel, try different row spacing heights to get it to match up. I use All Metal in wide open grassy areas, covers more ground and goes deeper. Or I use Disc at min setting. I don't use the notches. Jabbo
